This week, the House Appropriations Committee voted along party lines to advance its FY27 Labor-HHS funding bill, which includes increased funding for NIH and language supportive of the Institutes.
However, the bill would make deep cuts to the CDC and essentially eliminate the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
We, as advocates, must continue ramping up efforts in support of these drivers of critical research. We cannot take our foot off the gas!

Tens of millions live with permanent disability after brain injuries such as stroke, disease, or aging. Current therapies help people cope but cannot restore lost brain function.
The BRAINS Exploratory Topic aims to advance regenerative neuroscience by engineering graftable precursor tissues and testing their integration into adult brains.
Now accepting proposals from bold, interdisciplinary teams.

We thank House Appropriations Committee Chair @TomColeOK04 (R-OK), Ranking Member @rosadelauro (D-CT), and Subcommittee Chair @Robert_Aderholt (R-AL) for including a $100 million increase for the @NIH in the FY27 LHHS bill. This funding bill improves upon the president’s budget proposal in other meaningful ways, and we recognize the significance of these incremental improvements.
But for American patients and the economy, incremental improvements won’t drive the progress we need or even ward off failure. To stop heartbreaking diseases like ALS, cancer, and Alzheimer’s, we must make more than tentative progress.
Going bold isn’t optional; it’s the only path forward to the health, prosperity, and security that Americans deserve.

The Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) proposed rule would significantly change how federal grants and cooperative agreements are awarded, managed, and terminated.
If finalized, the rule would, for example, allow termination of grants for policy reasons, not just compliance or performance failures; establish political appointees as the final decisionmaker on every grant and cooperative agreement; put in place a host of new administrative requirements for grantmaking agencies and recipients; and codify limits on racial, ethnic, and gender-related research.

Over the long weekend, news reports surfaced showing that the Ebola epidemic is gaining steam and now numbers more than 900 cases. While the affected countries – the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda – may feel a world away, our increasingly global world means that infectious diseases like Ebola are only a plane ride away. According to our latest survey, more than half (54%) of Americans don't think our elected leaders are doing enough to prepare for the next pandemic.
Read about these critical issues, as well as restructuring PEPFAR, the latest on new and ongoing ARPA-H initiatives, an upcoming member-only meeting on AI, and more in this week's Weekly Letter.
