Since 2021, Maryland has gone without an official state song. This may seem like a nonissue to some. But shared cultural symbols, like a state song matter. It's part of the connective tissue that helps foster civic identity, state pride, tradition, and a sense of belonging cross generations of Marylanders.
The obvious choice for a replacement is Henry Fillmore's Lord Baltimore March. Inspired by the founding of Maryland, it carried dignity, prestige, and historical character without any of the baggage that surrounded the previous song Maryland, My Maryland.
Maryland deserves a state song that will unite people, and celebrate our history. At a time when America feels increasingly divided, Maryland should be investing in the shared traditions and cultural symbols that bring communities together. Regardless of whether I am elected, I will continue working to bridge the cultural gaps between our citizens, and strengthen our sense of common identity.
