I started Ireland's most ambitious camera trap project in Wicklow as part of Snapshot Europe. Since 2021, I partnered with @UCD_Wildlife @ReWildWicklow deploying 150 cameras, collecting ~400,000 photos, and ~31 years worth of survey effort. 2024's highlights below! 🧵👇

A wintery morning today in SW part of Białowieża Forest. -10°C throughout the night froze all the waterbodies including rivers, yet still Pygmy Owls & Hazel Grouses were vocally active in the sunshine. Still the most interesting was two Red Deer stags rutting! Exceptionally late!

Clean the drains Drain the land Cut the trees Clear the mess
Couple of my Hereford charts found their way onto Facebook, bringing out the dredging and gully brigade. How anyone can look at images like these and believe they’re the result of not clearing ditches or dredging some silt out of the bottom of rivers evades me.

"Worrying development" Buddy, what do you think happens naturally?
We will be discussing the worrying development of leaving culled wild deer to rot in our national parks on @highlandradio this morning. This practice creates bio security hazards and waste sustainable venison and is detested by those who manage our deer @Glenveagh_NP @NPWSIreland

Stuff like this feeds the narrative that hunters only care about hunting and not nature.

15°C in southern England tomorrow—just 4 weeks before Christmas. Most of England will be ~8°C above the seasonal norm. 🌍 The wild climate swings we’re seeing will only intensify as the planet continues to warm.

Like rivers overhead, the branches of this tree bring life where they wander. Growing for centuries in our Ancient Wood reserve in Ballinakelly, the entire area was probably named after this wood. In the Irish language Ballinakelly is "Baile na coille", the townland of the woods

x.com/JamesDonnellySF/status… Don't vote for the candidates that want your vote but laugh at you, your struggles and the boatload of young people leaving for Canada and Oz

Last night Fine Gael minister Peter Burke had Michael O’Leary (yes that one) launch his election campaign in Mullingar. The sheer hypocrisy to have him on stage whinging about government wasting money at a government TD’s event. 😂😂😂 Fine Gael don’t care about the working class. That’s evident. And Mr. O’Leary (who’s worth about a billion euro, fair play to him) certainly doesn’t either. Insults to teachers, left-wing parties, you name it he said it. And then to top it all off, he made it abundantly clear that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are two cheeks of the same arse by telling people to transfer between FG and FF. This is who Fine Gael are.

And to distract you from their mockery and disdain of you, they make headlines by punching down and making you think its another group's fault, not the government's fault things are bad for you. Critical assess these vile tactics. x.com/rtenews/status/1855626…

Why are these scenarios so commonplace here in Ireland? When will these people realise that all of this ends badly? Why is it allowed? Nature in Ireland is under constant attack in the name of ‘progress’. We need to protect it. Restore it. Cherish it.
Local large wet field covered in reeds and rushes being completely cleared by bulldozers and excavators. Had often seen Little Egret and Grey Heron foraging there when passing by. Likely full of frogs, mammals and invertebrates too. Depressing.
