It is very rare that I ever colourise an image, but sometimes - just sometimes - when the wind's in the right direction and a greyscale image captures my imagination, I'm motivated to bring out the colour of their humanity. Like this remarkable photo of a Senegalese soldier from the Great War, photographed in 1916 by Jean-Baptiste Tournessoud. He served in the French Colonial Forces in World War I and smiles broadly at us from 109 years ago. It should be noted that smiling in photographs only became common in the 1920s, so to find an image from the Great War of such a wonderfully beaming solider is extraordinarily unusal! [Cleaned-up and colourised by me].
