COVID-19 could have been the political tail-wind US cities needed to really build bike friendly streets.
Then why aren't they seizing on the momentum?
Poor leadership, bureaucratic red-tape, and car-centric thinking.
‘Biking is probably having the biggest moment it’s had in 100 years.’ — Thanks to COVID-19, bikes are all the rage, but are cities and towns ready for it? @LLBiggers is finding out how to make the U.S. more bike-friendly (presented by @britausa#sponsored)

Cyclists are a street life minority that face higher risk for road injury/death. It is not enough to simply adopt protective policies. We need a change in attitude from motorists, law enforcement, and the judicial system about who belongs in our streets. right2bike.com
Countless policies throughout history have disproportionately affected and oppressed POCs. Regulations surrounding e-bikes have perpetuated this injustice. Cyclists (of Color) have the right to travel without fear of being profiled or subject to police harassment.
Transportation is the largest contributor to GHGs and most of this is vehicles and trucks. We know that cycling is the greenest way to get around. Cities must prioritize and encourage cycling because all people have a right to a healthy, clean environment. right2bike.com
CBOR #12: Cyclists have the right to contribute to a sustainable economy by riding. Not only does the bike industry directly contribute to economic growth by providing jobs, it contributes indirectly by improving health, environment, mobility, and sales in retail. #bikenomics
Cities should enable people to prioritize their health and provide options for doing so. Offering low-stress, traffic-free trails or greenways encourages people to get out and get active and in turn has immensely positive effects on both mental and physical health! @Right2Bike
It’s not a car you need to move all that stuff. It’s a safe and slow urban environment. Given that, you can still use a bike to carry your suitcase, shopping bags, food, couch – even your boat! We’ve seen it all. right2bike.com#bikes#cyclistsbillofrights
The imagery used for cycling typically paints it as an intense and sweaty activity meant for recreation or sport. This narrative needs to change. Normalizing cycling starts with portraying cyclists not as ‘cyclists’, but as PEOPLE ON BIKES. #cyclechic#bikepretty
For all the good cyclists do for society by riding, we have the right to be genuinely considered and accommodated in plans and policies. This is not just about the 5% of people currently cycling, but the 100% of people that will benefit from cycling’s impacts. #right2bike#bike
Bike parking is as integral a part of bike infrastructure as the bike lanes themselves. Cities need more innovative thinkers, like the team behind @ooneepod. This NYC company builds pods that offer secure bike parking while also enhancing the surrounding public space.
CBOR #5: Cyclists have the right to well-maintained infrastructure that is free of obstacles like parked cars or loading trucks.
For this one we are throwing it back to the @caseyneistat video from 2011, because well…not much has changed. youtube.com/watch?v=bzE-IMae…

Would you recognize your city if mapped only by its bike lanes? The most important part of encouraging people to cycle is making it the quickest and most convenient option. This requires a complete and connected bicycle network. right2bike.com#bike
By requiring cyclists to wear helmets we communicate that cyclists should be protected WHEN they are hit by a motorist. This is a reactionary approach to bicycle safety. We need a preventative approach that helps cyclists and motorists avoid crashes in the first place. #bike
The connectedness you feel to your environment when cycling fosters a sense of ownership and pride in your city. We all have the right to feel this ownership. We have the @Right2Bike. right2bike.com#bike
