A good primer on why @ooneepod is taking the @NYC_DOT to court regarding secure bike parking. The Adams era agency is essentially saying that local and international leaders in the space (who submitted a 500 page, thorough proposal) weren't worth a single follow up or question.
Big congrats to @ooneepod co-founder "Manman" Mansylla on designing and engineering the city's first rest stop for delivery workers. From the city's first pedestrian plaza to street seats and secure bike parking, he's been a quiet, progressive force on NYC streets for years!
This isn’t just about one decision.
It’s about whether public processes are transparent—and whether local, community-rooted companies have a real opportunity to participate in building New York’s future.
This week, the @ooneepod team officially took the @NYC_DOT to court to seek transparency around the secure bike parking RFP process & decision. We did this with great reluctance — we've spent 3 months asking questions but have only received opacity. 🧵

it’s actually so absurd that some of the most valuable real estate in the world (two blocks from Penn station) is being used to store a decrepit 40 year old car… for free.
seriously why does Manhattan have any free parking in the first place
"For every low-income driver forced to pay the toll, 50 low-income New Yorkers will benefit from the toll"
The congestion zone is getting decongested. Keep those toll cameras rolling!
Early this morning, we began installation of the long awaited @ooneepod at Grove Street Plaza in @JerseyCity the station will provide free secure parking for 24 bikes at a time and will be directly adjacent to a PATH train exit. #bikenyc#bikejc@bikejc

We shouldn’t have to work this hard for basic safety design/infrastructure that was promised to us 2 yrs ago
Hard working New Yorkers aren’t pissed off at the White House. They’re pissed off about being charged $9 to use their own streets. Don’t take it from me, listen to what the people have to say about New York’s congestion pricing cash grab. End the disconnect. End congestion pricing. Now.
So glad to see the impact that @ooneepod is having in @JerseyCity. If anything the response from the community has been "add more locations."
In five years, we've gone from "will anyone use it" to "how come this system isn't bigger?!"
Oonee Bike Parking Network
Number of parking sessions Q3 2024 nearly doubled the total sessions from Q1 and Q2 2024 combined, 33% increase over Q2 2024
* Peak occupancy for secure bike parking facilities at PATH stations has exceeded 100%
* Construction on new large-capacity station at Grove Street PATH has begun – anticipated to launch in January
Another city is committing to a secure 🚲 parking system; This time, the nation’s capital. The @ooneepod team had committed to advocating for a systemic solution in 15 metro areas….and together with our coalition @cyclehoop and @altinnova ….we’re going to have a GREAT response.
Goodbye NYC:
I’ve taken a voluntary layoff from @WNYC/@Gothamist, with severance (❤️ you @NYPR_Union). It’s been a privilege to talk on the radio for 11 years: I filed ~2,000 stories, guest-hosted 5 shows, exposed abuse in ICE & at Rikers, helped win a Peabody for #Bridgegate 1/3
Some personal news: Last week the @ooneepod team joined forces with @cyclehoop and @altinnova to share our vision w/@NYC_DOT for a 🔒🚲 parking system in NYC. This caps a 7-yr journey for me and I want to thank everyone that has supported along the way.
