As Lee said, Slavin is a great shutdown D but not a true #1 D-man.
He was third among Canes d-men in 5v5 TOI/game and fifth in xGF%. He had the toughest deployment and best high danger suppression, but Walker and Miller were better in almost every other defensive metric.

The Carolina Hurricanes are a perfect example that not every winner has to be built the same way. Not the biggest or the best down the middle, no true superstars, no number 1 D, no elite goaltender, just a decently deep team playing a good system that they’ve all bought into.

Incredible that the only major misstep the Canes made was trying to chase a superstar (the Mikko Rantanen situation).
So many people counted them out when he was flipped to the Stars.
One year three months and eight days later, the Canes are champions.
