ALT MOSAIC PAVEMENT OF S. REPARATA, C5 CE. DUOMO DI FIRENZE Large parts of the C5 mosaic pavement survive in the excavations under the floor of S. Maria del Fiore, the cathedral of Florence. The palette is restrained, which kept the costs down, an important consideration given that it was all financed by donors, who paid by the Roman foot. The mosaicists were North African, among the best in the late Roman world, and hired away from home to produce a work of prestige. The designs are purely geometrical, with Solomon's knots, circles, chequerboards, and crosses.

ALT A Palestinian sweeps dust off parts of a Byzantine-era mosaic floor that was uncovered by a farmer in Bureij in central Gaza Strip, Sept. 5, 2022. The man says he stumbled upon it while planting an olive tree last spring and quietly excavated it over several months with his son. Experts say the discovery of the mosaic — which includes 17 well-preserved images of animals and birds — is one of Gaza's greatest archaeological treasures. They say it's drawing attention to the need to protect Gaza's antiquities, which are threatened by a lack of resources and the constant threat of fighting with Israel.
