Is the onus on me?
I was triggered when I first heard about the sexual assaults in Barcelona by Canadian police officers, only to learn they were from Toronto
It took the Toronto Police Service many hours to release the names of the accused, and I was on tenterhooks the entire time
I was strangely disappointed yet relieved to discover they were not the same officers who sexually assaulted me
Last I heard, those same officers were still serving, which means the Toronto Police Service has been protecting sexual predators within its ranks this entire time
Therein lies my dilemma:
Is it incumbent upon me to come forward with their names?
And if I do, will I be vilified, persecuted and silenced like before?
More importantly, why does the responsibility fall to me in the first place?
Why is the burden on victims to expose sexual predators within law enforcement, while the institutions that protected them continue to evade scrutiny?
If these officers are still serving, if complaints were ignored, if warnings were dismissed, if misconduct was concealed, then surely the greater question is not why victims remain silent
The question is why those entrusted with power did…
