The Montreal Biosphere on fire in 1976.... The Montreal Biosphere was originally constructed as the United States pavilion for Expo 67, the world's fair held in Montreal during Canada's centennial year. Designed by American architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller, the geodesic dome measured 76 meters (250 feet) in diameter and 62 meters (203 feet) in height, making it one of the largest structures of its kind ever built. On May 20, 1976, during renovation work, a fire broke out when sparks from welding ignited the dome's acrylic covering. The blaze rapidly spread across the outer skin, destroying the transparent panels that enclosed the structure. Despite the dramatic fire, the steel framework survived largely intact. The Biosphere remained standing after the disaster and was later repurposed. In 1995, it reopened as an environmental museum dedicated to the ecosystems of the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes region. Expo 67 attracted more than 50 million visits during its six-month run, making it one of the most successful world's fairs in history. At the time, Canada's population was only about 20 million, meaning attendance exceeded twice the country's population. © History Pictures #archaeohistories

A 42,000-year-old tree rewrote Earth's history... Workers excavating a site for the expansion of a geothermal power plant in Ngāwhā, New Zealand 🇳🇿, unearthed something no one expected. Buried under 26 feet of soil lay a kauri tree measuring eight feet in diameter and 65 feet in length. Carbon dating revealed it had lived for around 1,500 years, between 41,000 and 42,500 years ago. So well preserved was the wood that the bark was still attached. Scientists immediately recognized its staggering potential. "There's nothing like this anywhere in the world," said Alan Hogg from the University of Waikato. "This Ngāwhā kauri is unique." Its rings offered an incredible 1,700-year record of Earth's environmental conditions, precisely spanning the period of the Laschamps Excursion — the last complete reversal of Earth's magnetic poles. An international study using the ancient swamp kauri showed that a temporary breakdown of Earth's magnetic field 42,000 years ago sparked major climate shifts leading to global environmental change and mass extinctions. During a period of about 500 years, the poles remained reversed, with a field strength that varied below 28 percent of today's value. With the dwindling of the magnetic field, Earth lost an important protective shield against cosmic radiation. Researchers dubbed this episode the "Adams Transitional Geomagnetic Event," a tribute to Douglas Adams, who wrote in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that "42" was the answer to life, the universe, and everything. © dailystories #archaeohistories

Even as a retired Police officer I think that is a stupid law. Cops get insulted all the time and the good ones just ignore the insults and carry on. Freedom of speech is more important, even if you don't like what is being said.

A municipal law can't override the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Freedom of thought, belief, opinion, and expression would be violated by this law. It's surprising to me that a mayor would not know and understand that.

I have cleaned-up this fabulous Autochrome of the great actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) dressed as Cleopatra - a role she made her own back in the 1890s. Here she resurrects the character for the Lumiere brothers in 1907. The portrait was taken in colour 119 years ago and isn't colourised.

Is the onus on me? I was triggered when I first heard about the sexual assaults in Barcelona by Canadian police officers, only to learn they were from Toronto It took the Toronto Police Service many hours to release the names of the accused, and I was on tenterhooks the entire time I was strangely disappointed yet relieved to discover they were not the same officers who sexually assaulted me Last I heard, those same officers were still serving, which means the Toronto Police Service has been protecting sexual predators within its ranks this entire time Therein lies my dilemma: Is it incumbent upon me to come forward with their names? And if I do, will I be vilified, persecuted and silenced like before? More importantly, why does the responsibility fall to me in the first place? Why is the burden on victims to expose sexual predators within law enforcement, while the institutions that protected them continue to evade scrutiny? If these officers are still serving, if complaints were ignored, if warnings were dismissed, if misconduct was concealed, then surely the greater question is not why victims remain silent The question is why those entrusted with power did…
