This week, my staff joined Achieving Community Tasks Successfully (ACTS), Texas Southern University’s Bullard Center, and the HBCU Environmental Justice Climate Corps for a tour of Pleasantville. We heard directly from community leaders, researchers, and students about ongoing air quality monitoring and other efforts to address environmental injustices in the area. Thank you to our partners for the invitation and for your continued advocacy and organizing for a healthier, more just future.

Next Friday, Juneteenth will mark 100 years since Riverside Hospital opened its doors as Houston Negro Hospital, the first nonprofit hospital serving Houston's Black residents at a time when Black doctors were barred from practicing in white hospitals and Black patients were routinely denied care. On June 19, Harris County will commemorate Riverside's extraordinary history while celebrating its next life as a community health hub and the future headquarters for Harris County Public Health. Next week’s centennial event will feature free Wellness on Wheels health services, a Bike Rodeo, family-friendly activities, and free food boxes while supplies last. Join us from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as we honor the past and look toward the future. 🔗 bit.ly/RiversideHospital100

Councilwoman Tiffany is right: the lack of affordable housing is the root cause of both our affordability crisis and our homelessness crisis. We cannot address one without tackling the other. As inflation continues to strain household budgets and federal funding for affordable housing and homelessness programs faces mounting uncertainty, the responsibility falls on local leaders to act boldly. That means deploying a full range of strategies to grow the supply of affordable housing — including establishing a local affordable housing trust fund and expanding our community land trust. Houston and Harris County have the opportunity to be a national model. But true leadership means getting ahead of the problem: preventing homelessness before it happens by ensuring every resident has access to a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. houstonchronicle.com/opinion…

🎓 Every diploma represents hard work, family sacrifice, teachers who showed up every day, and young people stepping into the next chapter of their lives. I am proud of our graduates across Harris County and grateful to the schools, staff, and families who helped support them along the way. 🎉 Congratulations to the Class of 2026! 🎊

My office was proud to host the inaugural meeting of the Harris County Immigrant and Refugee Commission, the first county-level commission of its kind in Texas.  Thank you to the dedicated community leaders who have stepped up to serve as we work together to expand opportunity, protect dignity, and build a more inclusive Harris County for all.

That is some wild, unhinged stuff from the President. Welker is a good person and honest journalist and didn’t deserve that but more importantly we have a president who constantly pushes conspiracy theories with zero evidence and can’t respond when politely challenged on that.
Here's the full chain of events that led to Trump storming out of his interview with Kristin Welker, beginning with her pressing him on the weaponization fund, continuing with her pointing out the baselessness of his "rigged election" lies, and concluding with him calling her "crooked or stupid" and leaving

It was an honor to welcome energy leaders, workers, policymakers, advocates, and partners from across the country to Houston this week for the American Clean Power Association’s CLEANPOWER Conference. As the Energy Capital of the World, Harris County is leading the conversation on reliability, resilience, and innovation to power our future. Last year, Texas saw more than $24 billion in clean power investment, and the industry now supports more than 125,000 jobs statewide. Together, we can keep building an energy economy that creates opportunity, strengthens communities, and keeps Texas competitive.

To my friend Al Green: Throughout your distinguished career in public service — from your time as a judge to your leadership in Congress — you have led with moral courage, always standing firmly for what is right, even when you have had to stand alone. This past Saturday, I was overjoyed to celebrate your legacy as “The People’s Congressman” alongside hundreds of neighbors at the grand opening of Hill at Sims Park. As generations of park visitors form cherished memories and lasting community, the Congressman Al Green Pavilion will help connect people to one another, to nature, and to new opportunities for years to come.

✂️ Hill at Sims Park is officially open. I want to thank every community member, elected official, philanthropic partner, vendor, and staff member who made yesterday’s event such a success. If you weren’t able to attend, I encourage you to come see this beautiful new park for yourself soon. From the top of that hill, the horizon feels a little wider, and the possibilities feel a little bigger. Neighborhoods like Sunnyside have too often been told to expect less out of spaces like this. This park is a declaration that all communities matter and a reminder to dream beyond the neighborhood while embracing what’s possible right here in front of us.

The Hill at Sims Park officially opens tomorrow! 🎉 Transforming an active stormwater detention basin into a 100-acre recreational park so close to downtown Houston was no small feat, but communities like Sunnyside deserve investments that are just as bold and ambitious as those made in wealthier neighborhoods. This new community destination provides residents with nearly 5 miles of new hike & bike trails, fishing areas, vibrant murals, and a signature hilltop pavilion offering unmatched views of Houston’s skyline. Ready to see what we’ve been building? 👀 Join us TOMORROW for our free community celebration! 📅 Saturday, May 30 ⏰9 - 11 a.m. 📍11808 Scott St. 🔗 RSVP now: bit.ly/HillatSimsOpening
