In my dream last night I spoke to a large crowd in a public setting. “All students can learn and achieve at a high level.” Cheers and applauding “But saying it is not the answer. We must believe it; embrace it; and make the necessary changes to ensure it happens!” 🎉 🎊 🎉 🎊

Who has the perfect high school schedule out there? A schedule that works well for students, teachers, everyone involved! What does it look like?

I wish there were some way that the fans could unify and walk out. They could take control of this situation, since the NFL won’t. #fanswalkout #billsvsbengals #callthegame

Started running again recently. Contemplating signing up for my first marathon for sometime in May. Having a goal and a running routine has been so helpful. In just two weeks I feel re-energized and happier. Love me those endorphins.

“We accepted the idea of differentiated instruction a long time ago because we recognized that all students are different. If this is true, then we must also accept the idea of differentiated assessment.” 😍😍 #BuildingThinkingClassrooms @pgliljedahl

Admin. Those teachers who step up and take on the harder cases because they can work with “those kids.” Write them a card this week. We’re only a quarter of the way through the year, and they’ve already spent a full year of empathy. Lift ‘em up. Long road ahead.

I’m blown away that teachers still assess all students the same way on the same day. Is it not crystal clear that students learn at different rates? Why then are we sticking to a system that is SO flawed. And worse, most times students are never given an opportunity to recover.

Districts could kick it off during PD and allow teachers time to work collaboratively during dept and faculty meetings. No work should be expected outside of contractual hours. 3/4

Some people have asked if I have a solution. I’m looking through some old tweets to see when I last wrote about a different approach to assessments. I’ll add it to this thread when I locate it. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond. I appreciate your feedback. 4/4

Teachers, I promise if you come to me with an idea, which you feel is best practice, I will not dismiss it merely because it’s different than traditional practice. I vow to read up on the practice you feel strongly about and look forward to rich, fruitful conversations. #lead

Districts are more focused on DEI than ever before and for very good reason. What I don’t understand, however, is how very few of them recognize that the grading practices used w/in the district are completely inequitable… widening the achievement gap for marginalized learners.

Every single school and every single PLC should be having these conversations. Grading is one of the most impactful choices we make as teachers with a HUGE effect on student behavior, student learning, and student future!
Equitable grading practices separate the behavior from the assessment of knowledge. These practices emphasize the belief that all students can learn and meet learning targets. @MaryTownsendEDU @edutopia edutopia.org/article/why-i-s…

I feel like I should be able to write a whole thread in one huge tweet and Twitter should be able to break it down into x amount of parts with an #/x at the bottom of each page. I feel like that would be an easy thing for Twitter to do. Is this a thing yet?

Pick up ANY literature on equitable grading practices and this is what you'll see👇

Why do students and their families push back when districts/teachers implement a mastery-based learning approach? Because compliant students can earn As without much learning or effort. Grant Wiggins nailed it in 18 seconds!!!👇🏻 kapwing.com/videos/635bfb8ae… #kapwing via @kapwingapp

I would argue 95% of transcript grades are NOT accurate reflections with regard to what students have learned in a course. Hodgepodge grading is one culprit (including HW, etc). Averaging term grades is another. I’m not interesting in what students once “learned” but forgot.

Sometimes teachers show up to work late… They email sharing that something happened in the morning and they need some support with the start of their first class. Should we blame their teacher from HS that allowed late work with no grade penalty? That’s how we learn right?

And to be overly clear, I’m late sometimes too. 😀 And I also had points deducted on assignments if something was turned in late.
