I wish it was more widely understood that it is the land use for agriculture that is the main threat to the world's biodiversity. This is the abstract of this paper: nature.com/articles/s41893-0…

the fact that if you take a giant blob of hydrogen and let physics do its thing for a few billion years, you eventually end up with self-assembling atomic nano-robots never ceases to fucking blow my mind

The incentive to make apps to share funny videos is so much greater than making anti infective drugs. My prediction is that we are all going to die of superbug infection while watching funny dance videos 😰😱 nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

Barbara McClintock's discoveries on genetics were so far beyond the understanding of the time that other scientists ignored her work for more than a decade. But she trusted her evidence and persisted. Watch the very moment she received the Medicine Prize in 1983. #NobelPrize

The opportunity cost of undervaluing scientific insight is having to meet global challenges reactively, not proactively. Great example:
This month, the US stock market lost two trillion dollars in market-cap due to a problem that science R&D could have preemptively solved. That figure exceeds the sum of all funds ever received over all years since 1950 by the National Science Foundation, the NIH, and the CDC.

Without a great food system transformation, the world will fail to deliver both on the UN's #SDGs & the Paris #Climate Agreement. There are five grand challenges to be faced, by science & society, to effect that transformation: doi.org/10.1038/s43016-019-0… | #sustainable #foodsecurity

"X doesn't grow on trees" ... biology is so much better at manufacturing than any human-invented tech that we use it as an idiom for free and abundant. if we all do our job well in synthetic biology everything will grow on trees.

Our OrthoFinder 2 paper is now out! A big thanks for all the support and encouragement we've had from everyone. Our goal was to extend OrthoFinder to provide a complete, automatic gene tree based ortholog analysis that only required gene sequences as input. @Steve__Kelly
