This might be my new favorite paper - I've been kind of obsessed with these robots since seeing them at the Robotics Summit earlier this summer la.disneyresearch.com/public…

Have you heard the news about caves on the Moon? Re-analyzed data from our Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter found evidence for a cave extending hundreds of feet from a lunar pit—and it may not be the only one: go.nasa.gov/4d7wwZQ

*Cronch* I ran over a rock and found crystals inside! It's pure sulfur. (And no, it doesn’t smell.) Elemental sulfur is something we’ve never seen before on Mars. We don't know much about these yellow crystals yet, but my team is excited to investigate. go.nasa.gov/4bPdSow

Recently, I've been investigating a rock unlike any my team has seen so far on the planet. It could be among the oldest I've ever investigated – or the youngest.

Liftoff! July 16, 1969, 13:32 UTC – 55 years ago today – #Apollo11 launched from Earth, bound for the Moon. Years of research, testing, development, and all prior programs and missions came together to generate this moment. Neil, Mike and I may have been atop the rocket – but the entire world was right there with us on the journey. God bless America!

THE MOON HAS CAVES?! Scientists have made an astonishing discovery: a deep cave on the Moon, potentially over 100 meters in depth. Located on Mare Tranquillitatis, the same spot where Apollo 11 landed, it was found using radar technology. This cave formed millions or even billions of years ago and could be similar to volcanic caves on Earth. A coordinator of the European Space Agency, Francesco Sauro: “We have very good images of the surface - up to 25cm of resolution - we can see the Apollo landing sites - but we know nothing about what lies below the surface. There are huge opportunities for discovery.” Source: BBC

I had some spare ST3215 motors (and time), so I built these amazing actuators designed by @lethic1 and they work so well! Once I have a use for them in a project, I'll probably get the gears printed from a professional 3D printing service...

Tragedy >For You<

Enjoyed @AlexIrpan’s “The Tragedies of Reality Are Coming for You” The hard problems of robotics are not unique to robotics. In fact, as LLMs start to actually work and become widespread, they encounter more problems from the “messy reality” of the world. alexirpan.com/2024/07/08/tra…

Please, please, please listen to this. I am so happy to have a journalist talking about the problems associated with MBAs and product managers taking over technology development.

Here's the latest episode of my @iHeartRadio/@coolzonemedia show Better Offline - part 1 of 2 part series about how Jack Welch of GE directly inspired the tech industry's low-R&D, layoff-heavy growth-at-all-costs Rot Economy. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… Linktr.ee/betteroffline

With a name like "Headspin" you kind of had to expect this...
This is your regular reminder that employee stock options are kinda shit. Investors and founders basically out rank you and your co-workers and will regularly screw you over. I've seen a ton of ESO SPAC shenanigans.

Of course Peter Abbeel shows up in this type of paper :)

Their "application process" shows that they weren't really expecting an actual robot to show up and register an account on a site that nominally hosts 'bots.

Silicon Valley used to produce real, innovative, technology. Now it seems like everything is motivated by chasing the "greater fool" theory of business. The fact that building interesting technology is now labeled as "hard tech" should tell you everything you need to know.
