Journal Sq to Liberty State Park
200 cars & 4 buses, stuck in traffic
200 drivers could fit on 4 buses
This is a failed transportation system. Bus and bike lanes have 5-10x more capacity & 5-10x less emissions, noise, pollution, violence, and cost
(citations follow 🧵👇)
Huge opportunity to expand @CitiBikeNYC to the rest of @HudCoTweet as well
Millions of trips per month could be made cleaner/cheaper/safer/faster
Nothing else would improve traffic, health, & wealth so much and so quickly

NJ’s 2 biggest cities are ≈6mi apart, and connected by several bridges, all of which are highways, none of which are safely passable by foot, bike, or other mobility devices.
@GovMurphy@Teepeea2Diane
1 Lincoln Tunnel bus lane moves 10x as many people as 3 car lanes
6 lanes → 2 at Holland Tunnel = a fraction the trips as each PATH tube
@GovMurphy@Teepeea2Diane are engineering a historic transportation climate disaster, spending $10BNs widening highways building 0 transit
ALT NJ→NY crossings, peak hour (8-9am, Fall business day).
Lincoln Tunnel, pre-COVID:
- Buses: 30-35%, 32k-38k entries/hr
- Autos: 3%, 3k entries/hr
Lincoln Tunnel, post-COVID: buses down to 14k/hr, autos up to 5k/hr, (30 % and 11% overall share, resp.)

Today’s decision by @USDOT to allow New York’s congestion pricing plan to move forward is unfair and ill-advised.
I support congestion pricing conceptually, but it must be fair to all sides. Placing an unjustified financial burden on hardworking New Jersey commuters is wrong.
@SolomonforJC@SafeStreetsJC partner had 2 close calls x'ing Newark @ 5th this aft
1. kid was stuck mid-crosswalk, cars passing both directions, she helped him across
2. otw back, car stopped for her RRFB, car behind sped around for slip-left onto 5th, almost hit her
That slip-left onto 5th could maybe be squared up? It's a long treacherous crosswalk across 5th. Extending the PBL will help as well…
Just wanted to mention, hope the improvements can continue down there 🙏 cc @mjmanzella225
Rode Coles PBL yesterday, looks great, emailed City about extending from 14th to 12th youtube.com/watch?v=q7iktBek…
Should only require paint; Coles narrows 12th to 10th, so PBL is more difficult there, but 12th St underpass to Monmouth would be a reasonable end for Coles PBL, for now
ALT Coles PBL ends at 14th St underpass, but Coles remains wide enough to extend PBL to 12th.
S/b cyclists could use the 12th St underpass to cut West to S/b Monmouth, avoiding Coles between 12th and 10th, which is narrower and higher-conflict.
ALT Continue Coles PBL from 14th to 12th
(Coles only narrows South of 12th)
Help S/b cyclists use the 12th St underpass to Monmouth
(calmer route from 12th down to 10th)
ALT Extending Coles PBL 1 block to 13th would give S/b cyclists one option for cutting over to Monmouth, to proceed down to 10th while avoiding the narrower stretch of Coles between 12th and 10th
ALT 18th & Coles: square up intersection
eliminate W/b slip lane
connect Coles/Hoboken/18th PBLs
slip lane space can be a pocket park
Jersey City Hoboken Citi Bike data, July 2022: ctbk.dev/#/?r=jh
📈 New all-time monthly high: 108,111 rides
📈 25% avg YoY growth over ≈6 years
📈 32% increase July 2021 to July 2022
ALT Total Citi Bike rides over time in Jersey City and Hoboken. 12mo avg: ≈20k in September 2016, ≈70k in July 2022, over 100k in June July 2022
Street parking in JC is >99% subsidized:
- avg market rate: $3,000 / year
- residential permit: $20 / year
60,000 on-street spaces = $200MM/yr subsidy of car ownership. This is terrible policy / socializes costs of car ownership
(Source: JC Parking Plan jerseycitynj.gov/residentres…)
ALT Jersey City On-Street Parking, by the Numbers:
- Approximately 60,000 on-street parking spaces
- Approximately 1,600 metered parking spaces
- Approximately 30,000 off-street parking spaces
Map shows on-street parking on basically every street in the city.
Beyond embarrassing that the NJ Senate signed on to this bill, while NJ is experiencing a surge in traffic violence github.com/bikejc/njsp
@mayorstack @SandraBCunningh you should be ashamed of this vote.
ALT NJ Traffic Fatalities vs. Homicides, per Year. Traffic deaths are 1.5x-2x homicides (≈700 vs. ≈350 in 2021)
Citi Bike usage in JC Hoboken has avg'd 23% annual growth for 6yrs ctbk.dev/#/?r=jh
(Hoboken launched May 2021, shows demand for expansion of network)
In JC alone, April 2021 to 2022 increased 62%
Easy to miss cyclists bc they're smaller, quieter, & not stuck in traffic

Why parking is even worse than you thought.
Cities around the world are abolishing parking requirements🚗🅿️.
Toronto 🇨🇦 is just the latest.
But why?!👇
