15 years ago today—after five long months of beginning to relearn how to walk and talk—I was released from TIRR Memorial Hermann. I’ll always remember how it felt reaching this milestone as I readied myself for the road ahead. Like so many victims of gun violence, my recovery is a lifelong journey. After being shot in the head, I was left partially paralyzed and with a condition called aphasia. Words used to come so easily to me, and now I struggle to speak. As I reflect on how far I’ve come in the past 15 years, I know I could never have done it alone. I’ll forever be grateful to the doctors, nurses, and therapists who fought this battle alongside me in those early days. They are true heroes ♥️

A Kind Act for My Husband I have to share this story. My husband, Milton, just called me. He told me he was having a hard time finding a place to eat while on the road. Right now, he’s in Tennessee, and a lot of restaurants won’t take orders unless you’re in a car. He tried walking up to a couple of drive-thrus, but they refused to serve him. Then, something amazing happened. A couple saw him and asked if they could order for him so he could get his dinner. He was so surprisedand said, "Yes, thank you!" They placed his order, and when he went to pay, they refused to take his money. This is the kind of kindness that still exists in the world. There are people who are willing to help and show love to others. As Milton walked back to his truck, people waved, honked, and thanked him for the work he does. My heart was so full knowing that strangers helped my husband so he could eat and take care of himself until he gets home. I don’t know who you are, but I want to thank youfrom the bottom of my heart. People like you make the world a better place. ❤️

🚨 LAPD murders family dog during innocent Knicks champ celebration A family was celebrating the New York Knicks NBA championship win when screams of joy were mistaken for distress. A neighbor called police, and officers responded in force including a helicopter to what turned out to be a happy watch party. The family’s dog, Jameson (a Golden Retriever-Saint Bernard-Poodle mix wearing a Knicks shirt), slipped out during the response. LAPD says he charged an officer. The owner says he approached calmly with no aggression. Police shot and killed him. The devastated owner called him “my baby.” The incident is now under review by LAPD’s Force Investigation Division. Another innocent family pet gunned down over a noise complaint and overreaction. How many more dogs have to die because police show up like it’s a war zone instead of a celebration?
