📣 Call for Papers for the 2024 Multidisciplinary Approaches in Language Policy and Planning Conference @ALDSCarleton. Information on our website carleton.ca/lpp/. Join us in Ottawa next June!
For years at every single #ottcity budget, the @OttawaPolice consistently spew the narrative that their budget has been decreasing, crime is out of control and that calls for their service are higher than they've ever been.
But it's not true:
During last night's @OttawaPolice Services Board meeting, Chief Stubbs was asked about recent police budget increases.
He claimed that as a proportion of the City budget, it had actually been decreasing.
We thought this needed some clarification:
ALT Fact Check:
At last night’s meeting, when asked about the police budget increasing, Chief Stubbs claimed it had actually been decreasing as a proportion of City spending.
Let’s see how true that really is:
(Vivic Research Tweet, September 14, 2022)
From 2001 to 2022 the
@OttawaPolice
budget grew from $135 million to $385 million. This is an increase of $250 million or a 185% increase (nearly tripled). The proportional police share of the total City budget has increased from 7.7% to 9.3%
