The Chicago Teachers Union is demanding a massive expansion of its “sustainable community schools” model even though the data proves it is an objective failure.
@CTULocal1 activists imagine these schools as community hubs with wraparound services. But we now have the numbers from the original eight high schools that adopted this model in 2018.
And the results are atrocious:
>Math proficiency is sitting at just 8% for 11th graders.
>Reading proficiency is at 18% (compared to the 40%
@ChiPubSchools average).
>A shocking 71% of students are chronically absent, missing 10% or more of the year.
You would expect this model to be underfunded, but the opposite is true: Spending per student at these eight schools is 15% higher than the districtwide average.
Taxpayers are funding a premium price tag for a system that is failing Chicago's most vulnerable students. And as a result, parents are fleeing the system altogether. Enrollment at these specific schools has collapsed by 25% since 2018.
