New at "I Have Questions": All of our lives have an arc. They have trajectory. Is there a modern American life with an arc of consequence quite like Jesse Jackson’s? open.substack.com/pub/shdetr…

In families, workplaces, friendships, and in politics, too often we are not trying to understand. We are trying to win, or we are trying to get away. —Thread—

MLK Day feels different this year. Less anchored. Less visible. I talk about why - and what it might mean for MLK Day 2027, with @UMich historian Angela Dillard at a new Substack called "I Have Questions." open.substack.com/pub/shdetr…

One of the themes I hope to explore through reporting this year is what good government representation looks like and how that can fosters agency or make Detroiters feel powerless. Government power is derived from the consent of the governed.

Last byline of the year is one of my favorite pieces of 2025. We're looking at the creative forces behind PPL MOVIN, a social media talk show set on Detroit's elevated train — it comes at a time when the maligned transit relic undergoes a reevaluation. bridgedetroit.com/detroits-v…

I knew Elise Stefanik at @HarvardIOP, when she was a moderate Republican friendly with liberal peers like @PeteButtigieg. Unfortunately, we didn't teach her at Harvard to harness her ambition or deal with the likes of Donald Trump. My column on it all: convulsions.substack.com/p/t…

For the past five years, I've been documenting the impact of changes to Michigan's auto insurance law on badly injured drivers. In my latest reporting, I found a paralyzed man forced to live in an extended stay hotel; a young mom who can't get caregivers at her home every day; and a suburban Detroit father of three whose in-home care is tenuous. They have all been blindsided by a safety net cut by state lawmakers for savings that, according to the @GovWhitmer's administration, amounted to less than $30 a month for the average Michigan motorist — the monthly cost of a gym membership or car wash. I was complaining about theaters on here recently so I want say The Senate Theater and Redford Theatre are gorgeous, affordable and often showing gems. The holiday programing is great. I saw TMNT (1990) recently and they brought a local expert on stage to talk about the movie.
