Former #PoetLaureate, Dame #CarolAnnDuffy, is openly lesbian. If you read only one collection of hers, make it 'The World's Wife', in which the wives of famous men such as Mrs Midas, Frau Freud & Queen Kong get a voice. What an imagination!

Artist, filmmaker & distinguished professor of Arts @ucsc, Isaac Julien was born in #Hackney, #London in 1960. We love his movies 'Looking For Langston' (1989) & 'Young Soul Rebels' (1991). Knighted & quite right too!

#DerekJarman was a filmmaker, artist & #LGBT activist who died of #AIDS in 1994 (age 52😢). He made many movies but #Caravaggio (1986) is seen as his most accessible. He emulates the artist's use of #chiaroscuro (light/dark) in the film. Just beautiful! Watch it.

#DavidBowie is probably the most famous bisexual this country has produced. Our students learn about the pivotal moment in #UK cultural history when he performed #Starman on 'Top Of The Pops' in 1972. It was a life-changing 3 mins for many young #LGBT people.

1/2: #VirginiaWoolf's novel #Orlando (1928) was inspired by her affair with #VitaSackvilleWest. Both women were quite open about their love for each other at a time when #British society was socially conservative.

#JudgmentAtNuremberg -Stanley Kramer (1961) is on BBC Four at 9pm. It's about the Nuremberg Trials and is quite astonishing in its moral clarity. Everyone in this is great- and everyone is in it. But it is #JudyGarland who is the revelation. youtube.com/watch?v=tMVS4aJz…

One in every four cowboys was believed to be a Black man released from slavery despite the stories told in popular books and movies although the most famous cowboys of the old west were white. Some notable cowboys! A THREAD
