In 3 successive votes, @splcenter staff used the tools of workplace democracy to express their lack of faith in SPLC leadership. Each time, they gave Margaret Huang and SPLC management a failing grade.
That is why we are now calling for the Board to remove Margaret Huang as CEO.
We just ratified our second contract since we formed our union in 2019.

The workers of the SPLC have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with the SPLC's management after nine months of negotiations.
This is the second contract the
SPLC Union has ratified since its formation in 2019, and it includes multiple new pro-labor provisions that will contribute to the organization's health and resilience during a time when the work of the SPLC's line staff is more crucial than ever.

Of the many wins for the 220 unionized workers at the SPLC, this contract includes:
• continued remote work flexibility
• an additional four weeks of parental leave
• significant wage increases, particularly for the lowest-paid employees
• Union-informed vetting and planning process in the event of potential layoffs
• worker protections and responsible limitations related to artificial intelligence in the workplace
• a plan to explore options for improving the ethical footprint of retirement investments
and more!

Our first contract dramatically improved
pay and benefits at the SPLC.
This contract takes it a step further by providing additional protections and responding to the threats that our members face today.

After mass layoffs in 2024, SPLC's leaders had a lot of work to do in restoring our members' sense of security and dignity.
And they still have a ways to go on that front.
But we're sincere in our belief that the organization and its work truly benefit when staff wellbeing is a priority, and management responded to that sincerity during the bargaining process.
We live in tough times, but we’re ready for the fight ahead!

We are living through a moment that demands leadership. This agreement is leadership in action.
It demonstrates the power of trust, solidarity, and shared purpose at the Southern Poverty Law Center.
We are ready for the fight ahead.
This agreement is a testament to the power of collective bargaining, providing better protections and well-deserved recognition for the workers who drive the SPLC's impact across the South and beyond.
Jeff Bezos gave $75 million to support Melania Trump's vanity film, but he doesn't have the money for the hundreds of journalists he laid off at The Post today.
Democracy dies with Bezos – unless we fight back. Here's how you can help:

1/ READY TO STRIKE: More than 80% of our members signed a pledge saying we are prepared to strike unless @propublica agrees to a fair contract.

So many have given to The Post Guild’s fundraising effort, and we are floored. But we also ask you to consider supporting the fundraiser for our international staff and staff in our bureaus who aren’t Guild eligible. They are absolutely vital to coverage. gofund.me/a325666b6
Hundreds of our members have been laid off without rhyme or reason. Those who remain are reeling. One of our own started this GoFundMe. If you are inclined, feel free to share or donate. gofund.me/f0f6a0b8d
The Washington-Baltimore News Guild strongly condemns the layoffs announced today at The Washington Post. These cuts represent yet another blow to a newsroom that has already been pushed to its limits and a disservice to the readers who rely on The Post for rigorous, independent journalism.
Join us Thursday for a rally to #SaveThePost!! The rally will run from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at 1301 K St. NW!!
Bring friends! Bring gloves! Bring a love of journalism!
The Washington-Baltimore News Guild unequivocally condemns the FBI search of @postguild member Hannah Natanson's home and seizure of her electronics by federal agents.
Such actions represent a dangerous escalation that threatens press freedom and the fundamental role of journalists in holding power accountable.

The Washington Post Guild is alarmed and appalled by federal law enforcement’s search and seizure of reporter Hannah Natanson’s property and personal devices. Hannah is a valued member of our union whose work covering the federal workforce has been essential (1/3)
On January 9, ICE arrested a member of our union, the Minnesota Newspaper & Communications Guild, as part of Operation Metro Surge.
He has been transferred to a detention facility in Texas, where he is awaiting action on his petition for habeas corpus: newsguild.org/guild-member-d…
The Trump admin is using AI to scan visa-holders’ social media for dissent. This is a flat-out attack on our first amendment rights, to satisfy their mass deportation agenda.
America’s unions will fight to stop them from suppressing workers’ freedom of speech.
AFT is suing the Trump administration’s search of social media posts of visa holders for violating First Amendment rights. This surveillance program wrongfully seeks to coerce silence and chill the free speech of members by threatening to revoke visas.

Over the weekend, WBNG members marched in Selma for the 60th Bridge Crossing Jubilee, honoring workers & civil rights leaders who came before us.
60 years ago, they faced brutal attacks for demanding voting rights, and we march in their footsteps—still organizing and refusing to back down.
🔴“largest deportation operation in American history,” the cadre of attorneys at Southern Poverty Law Center #SPLC who amounted to first line of legal defense for undocumented immigrants is NO MORE — due to SPLC President & CEO @MargaretLHuang#Immigrationcnn.com/2025/02/19/politics/…
.@cnn covers SPLC’s catastrophic decision to layoff its entire immigration staff in June.
SPLC says it did so because they want to focus on “broad, systematic issues.” So why can’t SPLC executives explain how they plan to do so? cnn.com/2025/02/19/politics/…
ASAN staff is uniting to form the Autistic Self Advocacy Union! Today, we have officially asked management to voluntarily recognize our union. We hope they choose to do so soon!
ALT Textured pink background with a light pink rounded square in the center. Inside, green text is at the top in an arch that reads: ASAN Staff is Uniting to Form the Autistic Self Advocacy Union! There is a picture of 11 faces with a zoom background that has the ASAU logo. Text reads: We organized as part of the Pacific Media Workers Guild, a local chapter of The NewsGuild-Communication Workers of America (TNG-CWA Local 39521). A statement from the Guild on today's unconscionable layoffs at The Washington Post.
ALT A statement from The Washington Post Guild: We vehemently condemn The Washington Post’s firing of dozens of valued employees today, just days into the new year and at a time when the company is actively growing.
It is especially disturbing that Post CEO, Will Lewis, has not directly addressed his employees in a whopping 230 days — during which tumult and turnover have driven many of our highest-profile colleagues to other companies and new policies have been implemented with little explanation.
The diligent, talented workers that make The Post every day should not bear the consequences of poor decisions made by Post executives. They deserve better. The Post deserves better. We demand leaders do the right thing: address workers during this time of upheaval and stop punishing hardworking Post employees for the decisions made far above their heads.
We’re thankful for your solidarity during such a hard year.
Please consider making a donation to the SPLC Union Layoff Fund to help our colleagues still struggling after the June layoffs. Give them the gift of financial security to start off the new year: bit.ly/LayoffFund
There’s a lot of challenging work ahead of us. If we remember that we’re stronger together, we can make it through.
Let’s keep fighting for workplace justice in 2025 and beyond!
