Over the years, I've witnessed a few attempts at manufactured outrage around the Alice games. But most people seem to find the representation of Alice's mental and abuse situations to be respectful.
Still, there was some noise about the use of the word "hysteria" in relation to this near-death mode. With some people (rightly) suggesting that labeling women "hysterical" was a form of repression that shouldn't be included in the game.
Another attempt was made around the question of Alice's sexuality and her "need" for a partner. Again, with some people demanding that modern day ideas about sexual identity be allowed into the world canon.
In both instances, my response has been that Alice's world is comprised of those things she would have been personally exposed to as a child of her station growing up in Victorian London. And that if the idea of "hysteria" was prevalent in her life, that her mind would have no issue with picking up that idea and turning it into a sort of mental super power.
I always wanted to be respectful to her as a character - which is why I pushed back on suggestions that we make her a sexy psycho killer. But I also think that any attempt to layer modern cultural expectations or trends onto her would have distracted from the core narrative and overall vibe.
So, yes, she has a Hysteria Mode. And, no, she does not have a boyfriend (or girlfriend 😂). What she also has is a very singular purpose in telling a very particular story. And I think she does a pretty good job with that 🖤 🔪
