Rather a “No shit, Sherlock” moment! It's widely known that much of the Southwest/West country is only fit for grazing, not crop growing. But, still, useful to have a scientific confirmation...😌 #farmingUK

Great turnout for the Farm Net Zero conference yesterday, hosted by Blable Farm, Wadebridge. We were treated to a fascinating farm walk with Mike & Sam Roberts, where they explained their system ethos for suckler beef production. 1/3

Next, FNZ staff presentations on data collected from the project so far. Diversity seemed to be a key message: for example, #earthworms appear to migrate to areas of trial fields with the most diversity in the sward. Fascinating stuff! 2/3

Farm Net Zero is a great project and SWFC's Anthony Ellis is involved as one of the Monitor Farms. Lots of info/printable fact sheets already available on the @FarmCO2Toolkit website--and still 3 years of the project to go! Find out more at farmcarbontoolkit.org.uk/far… #FarmNetZero

SWFC’s Anthony Ellis continues to be “seriously impressed with this undersown herbal ley,” following a home #FarmTrial of undersowing oats. The sheep are now in and clearly happy! #herballey #undersowing #harvest22 #oats #fertility #soilhealth #carboncapture @natsheep

We’re delighted to be working with Varfell Farms, the world's largest daffodil grower & packer, exploring ways to improve their daffodil & arable systems. We were out last week near Hayle grid sampling former daff fields before they return to an arable/veg rotation. 1/2 #Cornwall

The Varfell team use #Buckwheat as a short-term #CoverCrop in their rotation, sowing in late June/July after daffodils & before an autumn crop. It provides good ground cover and soil organic matter & is a fantastic end-of-season food source for pollinators! #soilhealth #farmingUK

We are all deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and we send sympathies to members of the Royal Family. Her devotion to duty and love of the countryside has been an inspiration to so many in the rural sector.

SWFW’s Anthony Ellis’ home #FarmTrial of undersowing oats with a herbal ley has reached its conclusion: “Some of it looks amazing! Some of it looks OK. Some of it looks like it’ll come on now it’s got some sunlight… and hopefully more rain.” #HerbalLey #Drought22 #FarmingUK

On 16 August, @guardian published ‘The most damaging farm products? Organic, pasture-fed beef and lamb’, an article by George Monbiot. We respond in brief to four claims made in the article that require specific interrogation - further evidenced on our website.🧵

Thirty years ago the farm was mostly arable, with soil organic matter of around 3%, tests last winter show we have increased it to 8% through a combination of FYM and grass, these things do not happen overnight
