What happens if we summer seed winter hybrid barley into established #livingmulch (kind of undersowing into mulch) then takes the mulch for forage cut 7 weeks later and now have a barley crop heading into grain harvest? #biannualcereal
Perfect day indeed! Nothing beats planning for '27 grazing while nurturing your '26 organic cereals. This undersowing is exactly the kind of systems thinking that gives me hope.

🌱 Airlie Castle Mixture looking well after being undersown at Smailholm Mains in Kelso. Undersowing helps protect the soil and supports strong establishment, giving the new ley a great start without leaving the ground bare.

I see many trials here, interseeding, undersowing, no-till, compost tea, agroforestry systems, etc. ... there are improvements, which of course create other, new problems 🙂 ...

Good question. Depends on dry conditions during a season. Dry conditions make vows pull out grass along with their roots. So maybe a bit of undersowing.
Have been undersowing small leaved white clover today @2kg/ha
Going into various intercrop trials and spring oats for @wildfarmed
Minor amount of weeding and better late than never now we have had some moisture

Right, more like a catch crop. I reacted on this on Bluesky. In fact, after main crops on sandy soils, farmers in our country have to grow a cover crop by law. In silage maize e.g. by the first of October. That means growing an extra early variety or undersowing in spring.
Interesting. With our grass seed undersowing it’s important that the emerging grass seed manages to get 2-4 leafs prior to row closure then it survives for longer in the dark. Corn might be too tall for that I see now…

Undersown spring barley 🌱
A great example of making the most of the weather- @harryblake97 June ‘21.
He said “drilled at 200kg/ha with no intention of undersowing, however with the rain forecast & the wide row spacing I thought it was worth a go!”
