Under BJD rule 2022–23 & 2023–24, Odisha farmers got ₹0 state subsidy and paddy procurement fell from 79.16 LMT to 70.89 LMT.
After BJP came to power in 2024, a ₹800 subsidy was introduced and procurement jumped to 92.63 LMT, with a 93 LMT target this year.
Facts speak louder
Now the BJP government in Odisha is ready to violate its own election manifesto commitment of 3100 MSP per quintal. Recent announcement by the agriculture minister capping the Rs 3,100 MSP at 150 quintals punishes those who produce more and exposes false promises made to farmers, in order to come to power. A government that cannot encourage farmers for producing more has forfeited its moral authority. Procurement failure and now backtracking on commitment, this government needs self introspection.
