... @ScottMendelson's two Friday box office posts for 06/13/26, one for the newbies (Disclosure Day and The Furious) and another for the holdovers (big drops for Scary Movie 6 and Masters of the Universe, but another ridiculous hold for Obsession)... 1/2

Spielberg’s (arguable) state of mind in regard to ‘Disclosure Day'. (And I think it’s very telling that Spielberg chooses to end the movie exactly where he does...)
it seems people are reading MUCH more hope and optimism into Disclosure Day's decidedly ambiguous ending than i did

Obsession has now made more 10 times its $17.2M opening weekend. The last time a wide release outside of December achieved that was The Sixth Sense in 1999.
Focus' Obsession grossed an estimated $6.20M on Friday (from 3,068 locations), which was a 17% decrease from the previous Friday. Estimated total domestic gross stands at $175.58M. #Obsession #ObsessionMovie #BoxOffice

Curses, I forgot about SISU and SISU 2! But, yes!
Replying to @ScottMendelson
For an internationally produced martial arts kill fest, that's a good number! It's also on par with Sisu which Lionsgate put out also on 1200ish runs and opened to a similar number.

Disclosure Day lands the second-lowest CinemaScore ever for Spielberg, tying Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and ahead of only A.I. (C ), and a smidge ahead of the B his other divisive releases of the '00s received. His complete CinemaScore history:

So, #TheFurious should earn ≈ $3 million over the weekend after a ≈ $1.4M Friday. On a curve, that’s pretty good. To wit: 2023’s KILL earned $1.7M in total 2014’s THE RAID 2 finished with $2.6M 2012’s THE RAID legged out to $4.1M The last three ROUNDUP flicks totaled $2.875M

DISCLOSURE DAY nabbed $19 million on Friday for a likely over/under $45M domestic debut. Unless I missed one, that’s the 2nd-biggest opening weekend for a non-horror *original* (all respect to world war movies), behind F1 ($57M) last June, since SAN ANDREAS ($54M) in June 2015.

I’m gonna look at the positive and say this is the rare female filmmaker that bombs but gets another shot

For a moment, I thought it was a normal group photo, and then I almost jump-scared myself when I realized that Cruise was holding Spielberg’s severed head. Accidental HIGHLANDER cosplay notwithstanding, this is wholesome.
Nothing better than a summer Spielberg movie night in a packed theater with friends! Steven thank you for all of the hours of joy that you have given us in the cinema!! It has been a great honor and pleasure to have worked with you and to call you my friend. Congratulations to my dear friend Emily and the entire group of artists that created this movie. You were superb. We all loved Disclosure Day!!

It’s telling that perhaps the most “played onscreen in live-action” Batman villain is Zsasz, a “just a human serial killer who carves his flesh each time he murders.” Brian Tyree Henry as Harvey Dent has my attention (will Billy Dee Williams play his father?)
EXCLUSIVE: Sebastian Stan is playing serial killer VICTOR ZSASZ in THE BATMAN PART II. Brian Tyree Henry will play Harvey Dent, according to my sources. theinsneider.com/p/batman-pa…

This is excellent news for those (like me) who believe that “not a white guy” filmmakers should get the same “swing and miss” attempts at major studio projects as their “mostly white guy” peers.
BREAKING via @MattBelloni: Maggie Gyllenhaal to direct CREATION LAKE for Warner Bros. The movie follows a female American spy who infiltrates a radical commune in France.

This is the kind of disturbing statement that probably ought to be clarified, either by the actress or (since the burden of proof isn’t on her) the producers/studio/etc.
Original BLAIR WITCH PROJECT star Heather Donahue/Rei Hance has explained why she's not part of the reboot team. "I was offered an agreement that, for me personally, raised difficult long-term questions about rights, future technological use of identity and voice, the ability to speak freely, and compensation. Ultimately, it just wasn’t something I felt comfortable signing. "I genuinely wish everyone involved well. But preserving my autonomy mattered more to me."

This is the equivalent of Disney releasing new ‘A Bug’s Life’ outtakes on the opening day of DreamWorks’ ‘Prince of Egypt’. Petty as hell, but I can respect the scheme.

Okay, fine, sold! Not that I had plausible reason to doubt beyond my own general cynicism (I'd argue all four previous Toy Story movies are varying degrees of excellent), but nonetheless.
I am very happy to report that TOY STORY 5 is truly incredible with a story as tight, lean and inventive as can be (qualities that were somewhat lacking in the previous one). Toys in, screens & tech OUT. ♥️♥️♥️

The best part about THE FURIOUS being an overseas actioner is that I don’t have to care too much that it’s essentially ‘Pizzagate: The Movie’. Good luck with a (theoretical) Hollywood remake...
The Furious isn’t as good as you’ve heard. It’s even better. The action scenes are astonishing, but they exist within a story that offers a handful of actual surprises amid a film that is able and willing to (somewhat) shift gears and (slightly) alter course to stay fresh... 1/2
