As we take this weekend to remember those who sacrificed everything, Memorial Day is not about politics, slogans, or long weekends. It is about the Americans who stood shoulder to shoulder in places of fear, violence, and chaos and never made it home. These service members gave everything for our country and for the brothers and sisters beside them. They fought until the very end, surrounded by some of the very best our nation has to offer. I will never forget the courage I witnessed from Soldiers fighting rooftop to rooftop in Baghdad and Samarra, evacuating wounded under fire, and relentlessly taking the fight to the enemy.
