This corruption is not an isolated incident -it has become deeply entrenched in certain policing and law enforcement environments, particularly in parts of Johannesburg. Allegations of officers extorting money from foreign nationals, undocumented migrants, street traders and vulnerable communities continue to surface with alarming regularity. Areas such as Diepsloot, Johannesburg CBD, and Hillbrow are repeatedly mentioned in complaints involving bribery, intimidation and unlawful confiscation of goods or cash. Many victims are often too afraid to open cases because they fear deportation, harassment or retaliation. That silence allows corrupt officials and criminal syndicates to continue operating unchecked. The reality is that corruption at street level destroys public trust in the police and undermines legitimate crime-fighting efforts. Communities already battling violent crime, drugs, hijackings and illegal firearms are left vulnerable when some officers abuse their authority for personal gain instead of protecting residents. The key question is: why do the same hotspots keep appearing in corruption allegations year after year without visible long-term intervention? How many honest officers are being undermined by corrupt colleagues? Furthermore, most of these travellers were found to have overstayed their visas by more than 30 days, with some overstaying by a year or more. Let there be no misunderstanding: we will vigorously defend any frivolous or baseless lawsuit emanating from Ghana against South Africa. Our initial hope was simply to assist the Government of Ghana in repatriating its citizens in a humane and cordial manner. However, we will not continue to tolerate this public spectacles, characterised by incomplete information and outright misinformation devoid of any diplomatic decorum. Make no mistake: the South African government remains committed to regional integration. We are, and will remain, open to discussing the push and pull factors relating to migration at a bilateral level, the African Union or any multilateral forum but Let us be factual in our engagements and not pander to unnecessary public spacteclaces that are devoid of any diplomatic decorum. Having been on both ends of violence and hostility directed at migrants, Ghana has invaluable lessons to impart. We are ready to learn from your wealth of experience in this regard, including how Ghana has managed social tension while protecting, exclusively for Ghanaians, the very sectors in which Ghanaians in South Africa thrive. As we have stated on numerous occassions, violence directed at migrants is an affront to our constitutional order. Our democracy is founded on the principle that none shall suffer discrimination on the basis of race, nationality, religion, gender or sexuality. As we navigate this complex and fluid situation, we are determined to uphold this promise.

I reject the derogatory term “amakwerekwere” completely. It is a slur used to insult fellow black Africans simply for being from another country. If loving and respecting other black Africans makes me a “kwerekwere”, then I am proudly one and I will never apologise for that. I am against illegal immigration and have said so clearly and consistently. South Africa has every right to secure its borders and enforce its laws. But I will not support xenophobic hatred or the dehumanisation of innocent people who are here legally simply because they are black Africans from other countries. Discrimination based on nationality or skin colour is wrong. We must deal firmly with illegality not turn fellow Africans into enemies. South Africa’s problems will not be solved by attacking people who look like us. Let’s focus on the real issues: rule of law, border control, and building a better country for all South Africans without descending into tribalism or xenophobia. Enough with the slurs.
