#laligagate: LaLiga under fire for blocking thousands of websites
In Spain, LaLiga is at the center of a growing backlash over its anti-piracy tactics, now known as
#laligagate. Backed by a 2022 court decision, LaLiga and Telefónica have the power to block IP addresses weekly without needing a judge’s approval. The goal is to stop illegal football streaming, but the result has been a mess.
Over 13,500 legitimate websites have been accidentally blocked, including Microsoft, RAE, LinkedIn, and even public institutions. Many of these sites share IPs with services like Cloudflare and Vercel, so entire groups of unrelated domains, especially those ending in .es, .eus, and .cat, have gone down.
Groups like RootedCON tried to challenge the decision in court, but on March 26, 2025, the judge rejected all requests, with no chance to appeal. Now they’re thinking about taking the fight to the Constitutional Court.
Meanwhile, users and organizations are venting their frustration online, and the hashtag
#LaLigaGate is quickly becoming a symbol of protest against what many see as a threat to internet freedom.
