Except the translated edition routinely "translates" headlines to be more inflammatory. And even the native-language version depends entirely to survive on income generated by the translated edition indulging its followers worst prejudices. Imagine.

Imagine a parallel universe where Americans speak a language no one else knows, and every diplomat and NGO or media person and researcher and self-appointed regional expert got all their news on America only from a translated edition of The Nation.

This, by @ShMMor , is essential reading for understanding what Peter Beinart’s ideas about Israel actually mean.
I wrote a short piece in support of Peter Beinart’s brave vision for Israel. There are three lies in that sentence. medium.com/@shanymor/peter-b…

The madness of our moment distilled in 45 seconds.
At a Graham Platner rally in Portland. “Would an Israeli flag tattoo be a deal breaker?” “Honestly yeah, because I don’t support genocide.”

Katz & co didn't just need a manly man. They needed a manly man to stand up to all the Jewish father and mother figures who LIED TO THEM at summer camp. That Oedipal revenge fantasy is the thread tying all their campaigns, and it is what blinded them to Platner's obvious flaws.

The edginess and rebelliousness of the whole con was particularly tempting for the proud-to-be-ashamed, lied-to-at-summer-camp types so beloved by the Times but rather rare in Maine. Unsurprisingly, one of them is the wunderkind running the campaign.

Platner didn't emerge from grassroots. His breakthrough was in glowing profiles in all the elite outlets where, unlike at the grassroots, this the itch that always needs scratching. x.com/ShMMor/status/20611452…

Before you rush to explain this as partisanship, remember Al Franken. Before you rush to explain this as weakness for phoney white grizzled masculinity, remember Fetterman. The reason so many liberal elites fell for Platner and just can't quit him is something else...

But it's the opposite. If this is all there was, he'd be out in an instant (cf. Al Franken, Eric Falwell). The hostility to Jews, reimagined as a brave stand against diabolical forces at home & abroad, is the thing that binds him to the Pod Bros types and blinds them to the rest.

It is in those circles that since around 2015 racism is the touchstone sin. And where nothing can ever be as bad as racism, nothing can ever be more thrilling than indulging in racism against a race you believe really deserve it.

Platner's obvious problem with Jews (tattoo, Gaza, AIPAC) was what made him for elites like the pod bros an image of bravery, someone standing up to the powerful bad guys. His cult is with the liberal elites (glowing profiles in the Times, New Yorker &c) not rank and file.

Graham Platner, the phenomenon not the man, is fascinating social science experiment. Among many other things, it demonstrates the robustness of the despite-because conflation.

Lots of things I would perhaps say a bit differently today, but overall I'm still rather pleased with this article from six years ago which Adam just posted about.

Shany Mor's article (@ShMMor) from 2019 discusses how antizionism can be condemned on its own terms,e ven as it genealogically derives from classical antisemitism and antijudaism: jstor.org/stable/10.2979/isr…
