ALT Europe needs to start revamping and expanding its defence industries and military today. Most of that 5% of GDP for defence spending, by 2035, needs to take place in Europe, on European weapons and military, not American ones. Trump is highly volatile and unreliable, but NATO has always functioned as a protection racket, with the US being like a mob boss selling protection to their club owner "allies" (weapons customers). So the fact that Trump started not only threatening to withdraw, but actually withdrawing, that protection presents a unique opportunity for Europe. No sane club owner would keep paying the mob boss if they withdrew their protection; they'd instead hire their own muscle. Europe needs to do the same. We need to get our act together and start now. We -and Airbus, Dassault, Saab and Leonardo- will emerge stronger. In contrast the US -and Lockheed, Boeing and Northrop- will contract.
