Sobrang performative ng pagiging pro-student ninyo, Ateneo. No amount of PR statement can undo how this situation has been handled. Nasaan ang urgency sa pag-inform sa pamilya, sa pag-coordinate ng immediate support, at sa pagbibigay ng maayos na assistance during a crisis? Hindi ba’t mas nauna pa ang media narrative at interview with Homer Sayson? Pati yung flight na LGU pa ang nag-arrange? What happened to AMDG, cura personalis, and being men and women for others? Basic compassion, urgency, and proper coordination during a crisis should not be this difficult. We need accountability and transparency, not just PR statements.

The family must sue Ateneo and claim for damages for loss of earning capacity. It's not enough for the coaching staff/management to be jailed.
“Coach hindi muna ako babalik nang mga 5 years sa Davao kasi gusto ko muna yumaman at iahon ang aking pamilya sa kahirapan.” Rene’s last message to his coach before going to Manila. 💔

They would surely treat this issue differently if the boy came from an elite family.
The message of Rene’s mother to Tab Baldwin and Ateneo: “Isa lang ang masasabi ko: BAKIT? 💔

I really don't think enough people fully comprehend the worlds that are about to collide here. You already have people in geopolitical circles warning about the threat of famine based on surging prices / availability of fertilizer components, and you also have long-term weather modeling all converging on a worst case scenario for a building El Nino event, which will peak near the end of the year. These are two slow moving but entirely predictable disasters that when coupled together will each make the other orders of magnitude worse. (This will take months to fully unfold, but at this point, the die is cast.) There's no event in our history books that combines the current global population with the impending fertilizer shortage and the strength of the El Nino that's coming. We are about to witness an unprecedented event that will push crops around the globe to their limit.

The record-breaking freight train of warmth that has crossed the undersea Pacific since April is now arriving on the shores of Peru, forming El Niño Costero. That has caused summer-like temperatures in Lima, despite it being the start of winter, shares @hombredeltiempo 🧵

Now that the tsunami warning has been lifted, I can share the information given to me early this morning by the UP RI-NOAH Hazards Assessment Team. This retrospective analysis of the M7.8 tsunami offers valuable insights for the preparedness of coastal communities facing tsunami hazards, particularly those that may arrive within minutes after a major earthquake. The report of the researcher came with this brief message. "Hello po Sir. Attached po is yung animation ng tsunami from the Mw 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao. Arrival time based from both the animation and synthetic gauge sent earlier is around 10 minutes in GenSan through Sarangani Bay. Surrounding areas po na mas malapit sa epicenter have around 5 minutes arrival time. Tsunami waves after around 48 minutes begin to reduce in wave height as shown din po both sa synthetic gauge and sa animation. After that, no more major waves or imminent threat seems to be observable past that. The entire simulation time is around 4 hours or 240 minutes." #tsunami #earthquake

Good news! Since 2010, the world has been gaining more mangroves than it has been losing them. This is mainly thanks to restoration efforts & the natural expansion of mangroves followed by dropping rates of deforestation. Look at how mangrove forests in Sabah are recovering!

There is now a solid body of evidence showing that internet availability is causing a variety of outcomes that adversely affect democracy The answer may have something to do with platform algorithms, such as curated newsfeeds (e.g., on Facebook) or ranking of posts (e.g., the “for you” feed on X). Algorithms have long been in the sights of researchers and regulators as potential culprits of polarization because of their opacity and their known focus on maximizing user engagement and platform dwell time with little regard for the quality of curated content. science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…

Scientists across the country are expressing alarm as the Trump administration dismantles another tool for understanding how the planet is changing. Starting this month, more than 900 deep-sea ocean sensors will be pulled out of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans off the coast of Washington, Oregon, Alaska, North Carolina, and Greenland. Researchers say these are critical ocean observation tools. William Brangham (@WmBrangham) explains.
