Biodegradable plastics are a real asset in many ways. The ones used in agriculture can strongly limit plastic pollution in soil. But what happens when they end up in lake sediments?

One of my current research topics is on the effect of floodplain soil wetness on methane emissions. Little downside is that that means I also have to sample when it is.. wet. Very wet. 3 days nonstop rain wet.

Real picture from my Aquatic methods course last week, but almost looks like a brochure illustrating different sediment sampling devices 😄

After great fieldwork and a lot of data analysis, MSc student Noortje Janssen successfully defended her thesis yesterday at WUR, on CO2 fluxes in proglacial areas. She and I will present this work also at NAC and EGU, so stay tuned!
