Antibiotics help to prevent and treat infections.
We need a pipeline of new ones to fight infections because over time they become resistant to the drugs we use to treat them.
Yet, no new classes of antibiotics have been approved since the 20th century. [1/3]
ALT Bar chart titled: Why is it so hard to develop new antibiotics? The chart shows the number of antibiotics approved each decade starting from the 1990s to the 2020s. One antibiotic was discovered in the 1900s, zero in the 1910s, one in the 1920s, one in the 1930s, seven in the 1940s, nine in the 1950s, five in the 1960s, five in the 1970s, two in the 1980s, zero in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. There is a question mark on the 2020s. The source for the data is Pew Charitable Trusts, adapted from Silver LL. Challenges of Antibacterial Discovery, Clinical Microbiology Review 2011.
