"The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was not the endpoint of that struggle, but a single point on a continuum of those endeavoring to expand Americans’ freedom in opposition to those who would constrain it," writes @SmithsonianSec. cnn.com/2024/07/20/opinions/…

Pop culture has the power to change hearts and minds. Norman Lear took that power seriously, though he often used humor to personalize the political. "All in the Family" broke ground in the 1970s, exploring issues of race, gender, war, poverty, and what it means to be American.

The "All in the Family" cast visited @amhistorymuseum to donate Archie and Edith Bunker's chairs in 1978. Shown above are Jean Stapleton, Secretary S. Dillon Ripley, Norman Lear, Sally Struthers, and Rob Reiner. This photo is in the collection of our @SmithsonianArch.

For many, the chairs of characters Archie and Edith became pilgrimage objects to visit at @amhistorymuseum. When I see them, I'm reminded of how much of Lear's creative output asked us to grapple with the complexities of citizenship. My condolences to his friends and community.

Sandra Day O’Connor was the only woman lawyer at each place she worked for about 20 years. A self-described rural Arizona "ranch girl," she saw education as a powerful equalizer in her life.
Today we reflect on the life and legacy of Sandra Day O'Connor, who was the first woman to become a Supreme Court Justice. She was appointed in 1981 and after serving nearly twenty-five years, she retired in 2006. 📸: s.si.edu/3uJ0aE3

Her love of education and access to knowledge for all made her a great ally of the Smithsonian Institution. In her many years of support the Smithsonian's work, she served on the board of our @NMNH.

In this video from our @smithsoniannpg, she speaks about how aware she was of opening doors for women in the legal profession who would follow her example. "I wanted, since I was the first, not to be the last." My condolences to her family and community. bit.ly/46Furkj
