Could creatine improve your sleep on training days? A new study found that women who supplemented with 5 grams of creatine per day experienced close to an hour more sleep per night on days that they exercised. More sleep did not translate into greater gains—the group taking creatine improved their muscle performance just as much as another group who trained and took a placebo during a 6-week resistance training program. However, these findings suggest that creatine may become a “sleep supplement” under certain conditions, particularly those involving a significant cognitive or physiological stress, for example, intensive exercise training. Indeed, the placebo group slept almost 40 minutes less on days that they worked out compared to the days that they didn’t—exercise disrupted their sleep. But creatine appeared to mitigate sleep disruption during training, at least in women, which could allow for more consistent training to occur over time, yielding better results, especially over a time frame longer than 6 weeks. This does not mean you should only supplement with creatine on training days—it should be taken daily to really observe the greatest effects. Combining whole-body hyperthermia with cognitive behavioral therapy could be a highly effective alternative to traditional pharmacological treatments for depression. • Whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) treatment involves raising the body's temperature using methods such as an infrared sauna (used in this study). • The average core body temperature reached during sessions was approximately 101.53°F (38.63°C), with the infrared sauna set to an average temperature of 135.0°F (57.2°C) and sessions lasting around 123 minutes. • A strong majority, 81.3% of participants, completed at least 4 WBH sessions, showing good feasibility, especially after we adjusted the frequency from weekly to bi-weekly sessions. • We saw a significant reduction in depression symptoms, with an average drop of 15.8 points on the BDI-II scale, and remarkably, 11 participants no longer met the criteria for MDD after the intervention. • The study also uncovered that initial improvements in mood following the first WBH session were predictive of the overall reduction in depression scores. This preliminary study paves the way for exploring whole-body hyperthermia, using saunas, as a promising tool to combat depression.
