#stopwagetheft means workers having the power and protections to enforce their rights and get their unpaid wages back! Right now, the Ontario government relies on workers with the least power to identify and report wage theft. This means workers must weigh the risk of standing up for their rights against the risk of being fired. 👉 That’s why we’re calling on the government to take action to ensure that workers have “just cause” protections, protection for collective action (concerted activity), and interim reinstatement.

Being accessible to community not only happened with our classrooms but also with our outreach efforts. Having drop-in locations at the Hamilton Public Library, Eva Rothwell Centre and Mohawk College Fennell Campus created meaningful connections with community. #ThrowBackThursday

We at HCBN are shocked to hear of the closing of this vital community program. @mocityschool provided incredible services and access to educational opportunities for some many marginalized #HamOnt residents. FROM welding to Community Engagement this program touched many lives.

Over a year ago, 27 non-unionized workers at an industrial bakery recovered $185K in wages from their bankrupt employer by maintaining a month-long daily picket. A new article in @briarpatchmag chronicles their struggle and its associated lessons: "Organizations are a source of political guidance and material support, without which some struggles may never get off the ground or succeed. However, struggles only prevail when directly affected workers conduct them independently, on their own initiative. Organizations that create space for that independence help build a more robust class power. They encourage workers to become protagonists in their own fight and develop the collective capacity and creativity necessary to challenge not just this or that exploiter but exploitation as such. Organizations that fail to do so risk becoming a service that pacifies workers even while satisfying their immediate needs." briarpatchmagazine.com/artic…

The Living Wage for Hamilton is now $21.30, this is up 2.4% since 2023. Everyone has the right to a living wage, including those on assistance programs like ODSP, OW, etc. We need to continue the support for all income levels to be a livable wage.
