The Fabelmans is the best movie about movies ever made because its central thesis is that movies will ruin your life and the lives of those around you but what are you gonna do? not do movies?

Night 2 of ‘Bleak Week’ with Isabelle Huppert at the Aero for LA CÉRÉMONIE (1995) / VIOLETTE NOZIÈRE (1978) 🩶 An excellent Q&A moderated by BLUE HERON filmmaker / LA CÉRÉMONIE aficionado Sophy Romvari.

Also: I’m no expert, really learning as I go but the concept of back-end points is often a gesture of good faith. It’s extremely rare that a film makes enough profit get into back end. It costs a lot to market and distribute a film, and that’s what the profit has to cover first.

The best thing you can do when putting together a low budget film is consider what you *actually* need to pull off your vision. Film is inherently built on needless excess. Write for your budget instead of creating unethical working conditions.

Film industry practices are born of literal military mechanisms from the 1920s-40s (even the language ie.“copy” etc) we do not need to inherit these practices or attitudes. It’s an industry in its infancy and it’s full of potential.

Blue Heron was shot in 20 days, aimed for 9 hour days rarely started before 9AM (I’m not a morning person) 17 person crew, everyone had an active purpose on set. We had fun local snacks subsidized by contributions from friends. We had many wrap parties. We all love each other.

It’s been a month and I’m still thinking about Amy Zimmer beautiful performance (and face) from Sophy Romvari’s transcendent Blue Heron every week. If we lived in a rational society, this would be a star making role.
