Happy Friday, everyone. Here's a new view from JWST's MIRI of spiral galaxy NGC 1566. The colors in this image come from the emission of dust. Hardly any stars are visible. The reddish areas correspond with star formation, though. Data via Proposal GO 2107 / @janiceleeastro
A spiral galaxy with two arms. Pinkish areas dot the brightest points along the arms, while brownish and blueish hues dominate the spaces in between. A complicated web of dust forms the arms with many tendrils also connecting them in the dimmer areas. Pin pricks of light from background galaxies and very few stars are scattered about the image.

pretty sure translation got removed with the micro services purge. all of my mentions are in french right now. when i view them i see the spot where the “translate” text pops up expand, but the text is gone. so stupid.

Apropos of nothing, I processed an HST/NICMOS view of Titan from 1997-11-18. Data from Proposal 7180 / Bradford Smith

Possibly the only free, color view of the moon available from this dataset. I find this a little odd because even though it's an aesthetically difficult image, it's also pretty great by 1997 standards.

sometimes things need to get shaken up, but right now it's shaking so hard the soil is liquefying and I'm not sure what's going to be left

From there on, bigger stars can be given special treatment for that dark outline they'll leave behind. Medium and smaller stars can use a little blur or even nothing if you prefer.

A very early and preliminary version of Europa image PJ45_1 obtained by @NASAJuno earlier today (Sept 29, 2022). This shouldn't be very far from Europa's true color; I expect to improve the color later with more careful processing though. North is up.

I've been slowly working on some of these Orion filters. Haven't had a lot of time recently, but here is an unfinished JWST composite aligned over an older HST composite I made a while back.
