Factual citation error: We never advocated for discarding raw data.
nature.com/articles/s41598-0…: "Some frameworks advocate to precompute task scores without keeping the raw data (72)..."
link.springer.com/article/10…: "Landmarks will generate a single raw data file (.log) as well as..."
IMO, everyone redoing the trig will yield more errors than reviewable, open-source code (did I mention we keep the raw data, too?):
"Keeping only pre-analyzed results such as orientation error is argued to simplify research72, but this does not account for calculation errors..."
Proud to share our new #JNeurosci paper bit.ly/3s9qYZz from my dissertation on hippocampal and retrosplenial ( ant cingulate) activity during OLD memory retrieval in monkeys. See 🧵below for a summary:
We're excited to introduce our 2022 CNLM Awards recipients! Erica Ward is a recipient of the 2022 John Haycock Award. Join us on May 25 at the CNLM Awards Ceremony for Erica’s talk titled, “Detecting Dynamic Brain Networks during Navigation”.
If you're using #Landmarks, I recommend switching to the "unityRollback" branch for now. I gave up trying to make SteamVR/XR work with Unity 2020.x and will be waiting until Steam releases a new version targeting Unity's new XR and input system. DM/email any ???s
**Preprint Alert** In February 2020, perhaps the last normal month for many of us, my collaborators and I were alerted to a bug in a virtual environment we had been using for almost a decade. This project is the story of what happened next. Buckle up. 🧵(1/46 - yes, really)
🚨 I'm recruiting grad students for next year! I can take PhD students in the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program or in Cognitive Sciences. Contact me if you're interested in spatial navigation, virtual reality, or neuroscience faculty.sites.uci.edu/spatia…
🥳 Our paper is out today in Neuron!
New & improved. Details include how 2 record & stimulate deep 🧠 activity in humans during freely moving behaviors (🚶🏻♀️🕺🏻🚴🏾♂️). More studies with this to come out soon!

New video from the paper in @NeuroCellPress
In keeping with spirit of Landmarks, we have opted for Open-Access to the article, which is now published online in Behavior Research Methods. Thanks to @ArneEkstrom1 for making this possible!

Excited to announce that our manuscript, "Landmarks: A solution for spatial navigation and memory experiments in virtual reality" has been accepted at Behavior Research Methods. Special thanks to co-authors
@Derek_J_Huffman & @ArneEkstrom1! mjstarrett.com/publications/
Today, the SCANN lab received the Notice of Award for our first grant! An R21 from NINDS will fund a collaboration with @ArneEkstrom1 on the neural underpinnings of spatial navigation ability. Thrilled and humbled to receive it; watch this space for updates!
Have you been looking to develop a new skill during quarantine? Why not try your hand at turnip farming? Head on over to my "Software" page to check out this fun and free VR app, GroVR, that a friend and I built for Oculus Quest. Recently updated.

Finally took some time to generate my own 3D models for #Landmarks target stores (that can be shared freely; soon to be added). My subjects have always complained about how nav tasks make you run into buildings, so I added some code for a simple door interaction.
I just released 4 new videos in my "Getting Started with Landmarks" tutorials. Learn how to create an entire experiment (in a custom environment of your own design) from scratch in ~30 minutes with NO CODE WHATSOEVER! Check out Parts 3-6 in the playlist.

I'm doing a video series on "Getting Started with Landmarks." The first two videos are up now. Learn everything you need to make drag-and-drop navigation experiments (including Unity and Git). There's never been a better time to try using Landmarks! youtube.com/playlist?list=PL…
Check out my new website. It has everything my lab page had but with an extra flare of my own. Moreover, it has links to my publications, CV, social links, and software that I have developed (including a VR turnip farming simulator for Oculus Go/Quest). mjstarrett.com/
Out today in TICS! @NoraHerweg and I try to synthesize the past 30 years of often-conflicting human theta research into a coherent story. Did we succeed? cell.com/trends/cognitive-sc…
Great talk given by Dr. Jeremy Bailenson to Google employees in 2018 regarding VR application best-practices and use-cases.

After some code refactoring, there's even less required to build your own navigation experiment with NO CODING WHATSOEVER! It's also much simpler to create Landmarks-compatible environments now. Hoping to add Oculus Go and Quest support in the near future. github.com/mjstarrett/Landma…
