In a world-first, an international team of scientists demonstrated that Painted Lady butterflies (Vanessa cardui) flew at least 4,200 km over the ocean from West Africa to French Guiana, South America.
Butterflies are present in cities! But the communities are species-poor, homogenized, and contain more non-native butterflies than surrounding rural areas. 🏙️🦋 2/3
Flight period length may help to explain some of this variation! Butterflies with longer flight periods were more common in urban areas... like this painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui)! 3/3
