How cool is that! While there are many undescribed moths in the neotropics, it feels pretty special to rediscover a species not since it was described 100y ago :-)) This rediscovery was made while deploying AMI systems on the BCI tropical research station of the @smithsonian
Our Observation of the Day is this Oenoptera albimacula #moth, which may be the first time it's been documented since it was a described about a century ago! Seen in #Panama by mlarrivee. More details at: inaturalist.org/observations…

Hola che bichodatero, que lindo escarabajo, se llama Coraliomela quadrimaculata, en la familia de los Chrysomelidae, un grupo de escarabajos vegetarianos muy diverso. A este en particular le gustan las palmeras. Es inofensivo. 📸: Pablo Gomez (Instagram).

From my talk at the @CompSustNet NeurIPS workshop: The importance of impact-driven innovation in addition to methods-driven innovation. This paradigm of research is essential in AI for climate and biodiversity - and it also leads to groundbreaking new algorithms.
