Education academics seem to think that invoking the word "neoliberal" is a killer argument against anything they don't like. The authors of this critique of AERO lasted all of 3 sentences before bringing it up.

The decoding threshold is an important nuance to the simple view of reading. SVR suggests improvement in either decoding or listening comprehension (LC) improves reading comprehension (RC). Unfortunately if decoding falls below a certain level increases in LC do not improve RC.
There's compelling evidence of a "decoding threshold." If students in upper elementary and middle school fall below it, they stop making progress in reading no matter how much support for comprehension they receive.
