I am beyond thrilled to be one of the recipients of an ERC Consolidator Grant! 🎉 🎉 With my project “Sound-PC”, we will research alternative neuromorphic computing architectures based on light and sound! 🎵
Harnessing #soundwaves for #photonic#machinelearning: some years ago we embarked on first ideas of optoacoustics for new physical computation concepts. This particular work shows how all-optically created sound waves provide recurrent functionality to optical #neuralnetworks.
Scientists in the @MPI_Light Stiller Research Group, in collab w/ @MIT Englund Research Group, succeeded in laying the foundation for new reconfigurable neuromorphic building blocks by adding a new dimension to photonic #machinelearning: #soundwaves.

.@AvHStiftung appointed Birgit Stiller as Henriette Herz Scout 👏
Dr. Stiller, group leader in #quantum#optoacoustics at @MPI_Light, now has the opportunity to nominate three talented researchers from abroad to join her group as a Postdoc.

New paper in Physical Review Letters: “Optoacoustic Cooling of Traveling Hypersound Waves“ published by @StillerLab at @MPI_Light. Read how they succeeded in cooling sound waves in optical waveguides! . DOI: doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.….
If you want to know more about thermodynamics measured by light-sound interactions, read our newest publication in Nature Physics! Great collaboration of @MPI_Light and @UniFAU with @Leibniz_IPHT and @UTS, Markus Schmidt, @MarioChemnitz, @Chris et al.!
New publication in @ScienceAdvances!
An @MPI_Light team led by Xinglin Zeng, Philip Russell and Birgit Stiller created a unidirectional device significantly increasing quality of communication with optical vortices.

We finally coincided @MPI_Light with Francesco Tani and Birgit @StillerLab and got to celebrate our recently approved EIC Pathfinders Twistednano and Palantiri with some macarons and coffee :) 🥳
Looking forward to working with Silvia Viola-Kusminskiy @RG_VKusminskiy from RWTH Aachen and MPL, Olivier Klein from CEA and 6 other partners on the quadripartite of microwave-magnon-phonon-light processes!
The fourth and final day of the WOMBAT workshop ended faster than we could have dreamed. An inspiring talk by David Marpaung and an award ceremony brought the event to a worthy end. Many thanks to all participants who joined us at the MPL - we are looking forward to next time!
Outstanding, and quite moving, talk on the history of the scientists Brillouin and Mandelstam, given by our friend and colleague Luc Thevenaz at WOMBAT 2022.
Over 100 attendees are participating in the WOMBAT Workshop. On the third day, we were not only inspired by the talk of the invited speaker Giuliano Scarcelli (Twitter: @scarc1) but also celebrated 100 years of Brillouin Scattering together with Luc Thevenaz.
Our WOMBAT event continues. On the second day, we have already heard four fascinating talks by the invited speakers @fink_johannes, Xiaoyi Bao, Sarah Benchabane and Yiwen Chu @hybirds_eth. At 19:30 CET we will also hear a talk from Miles Padgett in our evening lecture at @UniFAU.
Today, Birgit Stiller, together with the directors of the @MPI_Light opened the 4th annual WOMBAT event. On the first day, Gustavo Wiederhecker, Warwick Bowen, Francesca Palumbo and Marc Serra-Garcia started the workshop with tutorials to bring everyone up to speed.
Reminder: The 4th Workshop on Optomechanics and Brillouin Scattering (WOMBAT) will be held NEXT WEEK from the 14th - 17th of June at the @MPI_Light in Erlangen.
After a virtual workshop in 2021 due to COVID-19, this year we are looking forward to seeing everyone in person again!
