10 years ago today, 49 souls lost to hate. We remember those we lost. In their memory, we commit to fight hate and with purpose stand up to those that would incite attacks on our communities. #Pulse #OrlandoStrong Hope is Never Silent @HMilkFoundation youtu.be/o_gqU59dxYc?is=s271…

Uncle Harvey would have been 96 today, & wrote these words 5 decades ago on how he hoped to be remembered. Please read & share them today in his memory. He exceeded his hopes to be the spark for all of us to live authentic & visible lives all across the globe. #harveymilkday

Heartbroken- Jason Collins has lost his brave cancer battle today! Jason came out in 2013, the first active athlete in any of NA’s four major sports to publicly identify as gay. But Jason would go on to work with me and many others at the UN, on marriage equality and even abroad.

Today we lost a historic leader in the global human rights community whom I was privileged to call a friend & mentor. The Rev. Jesse Jackson believed firmly in fully inclusive equality that he viewed as a rainbow, was one of the earliest supporters of LGBT rights. Godspeed Jesse!

.@StuartMilk told me he was on board the USNS Harvey Milk - to be renamed for Oscar Peterson - for three days and "no one expressed [to me] anything but pride in the fact" they served on the ship. "My uncle's legacy will live well past the 40 year life" of the Milk, he said.

Uncle Harvey proclaimed in his July 4th 1978 speeches,(before his brutal assassination) “All People are created equal. No matter how hard you try, you can never erase those words. No matter how hard you try, you cannot chip those words off the base of the Statue of Liberty. #hope

I was with my mom @NancyGBrinker when she spoke at the naming of the USNS Harvey Milk — a Navy veteran, patriot, and symbol of hope. I watched with pride as she stood with @StuartMilk to honor a legacy that has always transcended politics. Stripping his name is a slap in the face — cruel, unnecessary, and wrong. We’re fools to think a stronger military can’t also be a diverse one.
I was honored to speak at the naming of the USNS Harvey Milk — a Navy veteran, a patriot, and a symbol of courage and hope. Stripping his name from this ship isn’t just petty — it’s an insult to our history and to all who’ve fought for equality. We cannot erase what Harvey stood for. @StuartMilk

Today would have been Harvey Milk’s 95th birthday. In 1976, he met Jimmy Carter on the campaign trail in California. Two years later, after Gay Freedom Day, he wrote to President Carter—calling on him to defend gay rights. Find his 6/25/78 Gay Freedom Day speech online for more.
