Back in July 2010, a federal court ruled college cheerleading wasn’t a sport under Title IX. The case—centered on Quinnipiac University’s attempt to replace women’s volleyball with its competitive cheer team—exposed the lack of structure and governance in college cheer at the time. But it also forced the sport to evolve. In the years that followed, STUNT and acrobatics & tumbling were created with one goal: to meet the legal definition of a sport. By 2025, STUNT and A&T have earned NCAA emerging championship status. Fifteen years after being dismissed in court, cheer is rewriting the rules.
