Sorting through the archives, found this from 8 November 2013, a letter to the Evening Standard about cycling safety from Lutfur Rahman, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, urging the Mayor of London to take urgent action. How times change!
ALT Evening Standard - 8 November 2013:
Boris must tackle cycle safety now
THREE days ago, Brian Holt, a much-loved hospital porter who worked at Mile End Hospital for more than 40 years, was run down and killed while cycling on the cycle superhighway that runs through Tower Hamlets. In the same week, two other cyclists have suffered serious injuries at Holborn and Oxford Circus. The total number of cyclists killed on London's roads this year is now nine.
This carnage has got to stop.
In Tower Hamlets we've invested Β£100,000 to improve cycle lanes and junctions but only so much can be done at a local level. Mayor Johnson must urgently review cycle safety across London, especially on the cycle superhighway routes.
Lutfur Rahman, Mayor of Tower Hamlets
We've been getting reports of @TowerHamletsNow Enforcement Officers harassing cyclists as they go through the shared pavement between Columbia Road and Gosset Street, outside The Birdcage pub. Has this happened to you? If so, we'd love to hear about it - get in touch!
π’ So pleased we finally have a camera to help enforce our #SchoolStreet.

Read why local parent Kate would be devastated if Lutfur Rahman spends Β£2m ripping out our safer streets.
Since the LTNs came in, car collisions near schools in the scheme area have dropped from 3 per year to just 1.
We CAN'T go back to dangerous streets. #SaveOurSaferStreets
[NEW] London lorries safer forever thanks to 10 years of @London_Cycling campaigning, as our trustee Dr Nedah Darabi explains.
βοΈ But it's not over. We checked every London council lorry contract, and some are incredibly poor.

Very disappointing news from @SarahWoodberryD @mayorofhackney@carowoodley, following the already disappointing decision regarding Pembury Circus.
The DfT road collision dataset will keep piling up new entries as long as @hackneycouncil does not properly engage with stakeholders
1/ Hackney is moving forward with a Downham Road scheme without cycling provision.
We don't think the decision makes any sense, and is a wasted opportunity.
@SarahWoodberryD @mayorofhackney@carowoodley please read to understand the background of this strange decision ->
Sign this petition opposing the removal of the Bethnal Green Low Traffic Neighbourhood.
Consultation after consultation reveals this LTN is popular and people want to keep it.
Despite this the Mayor of Tower Hamlets has vowed to open it back up to motor traffic.
Lutfur Rahman has decided to cut down the trees and tear out the cycle lanes in this photo and replace it with thousands of cars despite repeated objections from residents and stakeholders. Sign our petition to get the Mayor of London to stop this.

In 2022, Lutfur Rahman was elected with a promise to remove Tower Hamlets safer streets. 2.5 years later, they are still here. I love Arnold Circus, I doubt anyone would want it back the way it was. A sensible evolution in making London for people rather than polluting vehicles
