Our experts suspect this behavior change is because the warm, shallow waters of the Bay are desirable feeding and resting grounds for these gentle giants. We are dedicated to proactively preventing these tragedies, and each investigation helps us better understand how to do so.
Our team is hopeful new thermal cameras can help spot whales and alert operators to their presence to do just that 🙌 This new tech is possible thanks to our incredible partners @UCSBenioffOcean 🌊 Learn more about it at bit.ly/4egVngk.
Gray whales have been utilizing the Bay more frequently along their migratory route, and their population has declined significantly in recent years. Historical stranding data for all whale species responses by our scientists can be found at bit.ly/40JsQbj.
Our scientists and partners from @calacademy performed a necropsy at Angel Island State Park, where the carcass was towed. Their investigation uncovered evidence of blunt force trauma consistent with vessel strike including a broken vertebra and hemorrhaging behind the skull.
A necropsy revealed mesenteric torsion, intestines twisting to cut off blood supply to the gastrointestinal tract. Experts suspect this rare condition, which can be fatal within 24hrs, caused the sudden death, though the investigation is still pending additional test results.
We're saddened by this tragic outcome, but comforted knowing that even in death, Makamae will provide invaluable insights to conservation efforts to save this species 🦭🌈 Find ways YOU can help endangered Hawaiian monk seals athttps://bit.ly/32ZtWUp
We're heartbroken to share the sudden passing of Hawaiian monk seal RU72, Makamae 💔
She was named Makamae, meaning precious, valuable, darling, or beloved, by Kohala Elementary School students ❤️
Since her arrival at Ke Kai Ola in November due to her mother, Waimanu, not nursing her, Makamae had been making slow but steady progress with our animal care experts. Sadly, she took an unexpected turn and despite supportive care from her veterinary team passed June 4.
