Some drugs increase the #mutation rate of their target #pathogen, raising the concerns they might increase the pathogen’s rate of adaptation. This #PLOSBiology Perspective proposes a four-step process to evaluate the evolutionary safety of new treatments. plos.io/491R2sq

Our new paper in @MolBioEvol suggests that #aneuploidy can be an *evolutionary diversion* on the path to adaptation rather than a stepping stone. doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msae0… By Ilia Kohanovski & Martin Pontz, help from @AnnaSelmecki, Petra Vande Zande @TPilpel, Orna Dahan, Avihu Yona

I heard from my father-in-law Avner Shitreet zl يا شاب بين الشباب، اللي عمرك وزمانك ما استشببت، كل الشباب استشببوا وأنت بعضك ما استشببت O young man among the youth, the one who never aged with you and your time, all the young people aged while you remained unchanged

As they have done for the past decade, Prof. Avraham Levy and Naomi Avivi-Ragolsky of Weizmann’s Plant and Environmental Sciences Department planned to conduct a field experiment with wheat this year at the Gilat experimental station in the south. But on October 7, that entire region became a war zone in the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel. Undeterred and perhaps even motivated by the harsh circumstances, Levy and Dr. David Bonfil from the Gilat station decided to conduct the experiment at Gilat as planned, as a symbol of renewal and resilience in the face of adversity. In November, when fighting in Gaza was still in full swing, the researchers proceeded with the wheat sowing. One of the varieties sown in Gilat this year is also being documented in the "Wheat Grows Again" project, which live streams wheat growing in the Institute's greenhouse to raise international awareness about the hostage crisis. The growth of wheat, which was sown by Prof. Levy himself, illustrates the passing of time, and the live stream also displays the names of the hostages, as well as a clock that has already counted a hundred days since their kidnapping. I believe this is important and we now wish to convey to the FDA
Are new drugs likely to lead to more dangerous variants in the future? Weizmann Institute researchers propose a new type of test - Evolutionary Safety. Prof. @TPilpel and doctoral student @GabrielaL3001 from the Molecular Genetics Department have created a mathematical model for calculating the evolutionary risk associated with medical treatments that accelerate the mutation rate of viruses and bacteria. Regulatory bodies and pharmaceutical companies may benefit from this model when it comes to developing and marketing these treatments. "The model can help us more accurately predict the emergence of new strains and design drugs that will not only ensure patient recovery but will also be safe for the entire population," researchers say >> bit.ly/Safty-first-wis
