While the official awareness week has wrapped up, the technical reality of polio eradication remains a critical conversation. To understand the importance of immunization, it is helpful to look at how this specific virus operates and why the global push for vaccination is so precise. Polio is a highly infectious viral disease that largely affects children under five years of age. The virus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. There is no cure for polio; it can only be prevented through immunization. The strategy for eradication relies on two main types of vaccines: • Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV): Administered as drops, this is essential for stopping person-to-person transmission in communities. • Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV): An injectable dose that provides a high level of individual protection against the disease. The “lesson” in any immunization drive is the concept of population immunity. Because the virus can only survive in humans, vaccinating every child eventually leaves the virus with no hosts to infect, leading to its permanent extinction. Nigeria and the rest of the world have made incredible strides, but as long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk. Reflection on these dates serves as a reminder that consistency in routine immunization is what keeps our communities safe from a resurgence. #tydf #tydfimpact #immunizationweek
