Does anyone else remember the whole Somalian fraud expose and Tim Walz deciding not to run for reelection. That was weird, right?

Now that I'm refreshed with three hours of sleep, I think it's safe to say that it doesn't really matter for the purposes of public shouting whether the shooting yesterday was "justified" or "justifiable" in any ethical or (idealized) legal framework. The reason for this is that we are, as I have often said, enjoying a low-grade civil war, and in war exigency overrules these kinds of concerns. Most of what's been happening over the past 24h on X the Everything Site is partisans engaging, consciously or not, in frenzied information warfare to control a narrative. This can bear a superficial resemblance to "discourse" or "truth-seeking" but I think to veterans--especially those who remember the before-times--the difference will be obvious. For those of you who are deliberately enjoying this war, by all means have fun storming the castle. I can only ask that you leave me out of the exercise, although this being a war I don't actually expect to be left alone. For people who find themselves swept up in strong opinions about a contentious and politically-laden incident before the body is even cool, but don't actually want to live as an egregore's appendage: occasional reminder that you don't have to. Your body is secure on the Internet, but your mind and your soul are very much exposed. Stay safe out there.

Guy, the political left had like 7 forced martyrs as an excuse to riot. Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Jakob Blake, Ma'Khia Bryant. They were all political pawns and built up by media and used as an excuse to break quarantine and inflict billions of dollars of property damage. Charlie Kirk was literally murdered sitting still in a chair with a microphone in his hand, and not a single building burned down, What the fuck are you even trying to do here? What are you doing.

I used to believe nurture was everything and that nature wasn't important. My belief changed because of my own life experience and from reading studies about genetic inheritance. In my early twenties I believed the difference between the sexes was entirely due to socialisation. I no longer believe that (for the same reasons as above.) I used to believe in unilateral nuclear disarmament. I no longer do. I used to believe cannabis was essentially harmless. I no longer do because I've witnessed it wreaking havoc on someone I care about's mental health. I used to believe in assisted dying. I no longer do, largely because I'm married to a doctor who opened my eyes to the possibilities of coercion of sick or vulnerable people. I've struggled with religious faith since my mid-teens. I appear to have a God-shaped vacuum inside me but I never seem quite able to make up my mind what to do about it. I could probably list at least twenty more things I've changed my mind about. I don't currently have a single belief that couldn't be altered by clear, concrete evidence and in all but one case, I know what that evidence would have to be. The exception is the God conundrum, because I don't know what I'd have to see to make me come down firmly on either side. I suppose that's the meaning of faith, believing without seeing proof, and that's why I'll probably go to my grave with that particular personal matter unresolved.

In 2014 the brain trust concluded that the only way Multimillionaire Old White Lady could get the same minority turnout numbers that Obama got in 08 and 12 was to heighten racial polarization, and so the Obama White House spent the last 2 years engaged in race trolling. Trayvon, DACA… There’s a good piece by John Dickerson (no right winger) at Slate from that period where he calls out Obama for constantly "trolling the GOP on race" (it seems to randomly appear and disappear when you google it) At that time Robert Tracinski had a very good piece in RCP about what he called very astutely "Obama’s Southern strategy in reverse". Tracinski’s a conservative (who hates my guts) but the piece is just straight political analysis. I know all those references by heart because I’ve written that column like 37 times lol Once Saint Obama threw up the bat signal, crazies in universities and yes social media were only too happy to take it to 11. Most honest appraisals put the beginning of the Great Awokening in 2014. There was no big change to social media in 2014 but there was a change in the political strategy of the Democratic Party.
